Overview

Turtmannhütte is a mountain hut owned and operated by the Sektion Prévôtoise of the Swiss Alpine Club (SAC). It sits at 2,519 metres above sea level on a stony grassy ridge in the Turtmanntal, above Gruben/Meiden in the canton of Valais, Switzerland, close to the German-French language border. Built in 1928 and regularly renovated, the hut offers views of the Brunegg and Turtmann glaciers, the Diablon massif, the 4,000-metre Bishorn and the massive Barrwand. It is a favoured meeting place for nature lovers and enthusiasts of alpine hiking and high-altitude tours. Its modern infrastructure provides functional comfort for 74 guests. The hut is a starting point for high-alpine tours to the Brunegghorn (3,833 m), Bishorn (4,151 m), Les Diablons (3,609 m), Schöllihorn (3,500 m) and the Barrhorn (3,610 m), the highest hiking summit in Switzerland. The neighbouring Topalihütte can be reached in 4 to 5 hours via the Schöllijoch and Schölligletscher on a white-blue-white alpine trail (T5). Before the construction of the cable car from Turtmann to Oberems and the road from Oberems to Gruben in 1958, the Turtmannhütte, opened in 1928 with 30 places, was the most remote of all SAC huts; reaching it from Turtmann required about 18 km of distance and 1,900 m of elevation gain, taking roughly nine and a half hours. Today, in summer a bus runs from Oberems to the Hotel Schwarzhorn in Gruben, and on request further to Senntum; private vehicles can also reach this point (paid parking). Three route variants lead from here to the hut in a good two hours, and from Gruben one to two hours more depending on the route. The hut is run by the Tscherrig family and team, who extend a warm welcome to guests. Reservations are possible only via the online reservation system, and payment at the hut is cash only. Dogs can be accommodated on prior telephone reservation, one dog per night, in a dog box in the drying room for CHF 10 per night for use and cleaning, without dog food. The hut is surrounded by a variety of unique plants such as edelweiss, rhododendrons, alpine roses, saxifrage species and aromatic plants. On the way to the hut and in its surroundings, many sometimes short-lived but imaginative stone men (cairns) can be discovered, and the numerous stones around the hut allow young guests to try building stone men or other stone pyramids.
