History

The Turkmen State Institute of Culture (Turkmen: Türkmen döwlet medeniýet instituty) is a Turkmen higher-education institution and a centre for professional training in culture and the arts, located in the 'creative town' of Ashgabat. Its history begins with the Turkmen State Pedagogical Institute of Arts (TGPII), created in 1972 in accordance with a resolution of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Turkmenistan and the Council of Ministers of the Turkmen SSR dated 3 June 1971. In 1975 a two-year preparatory department for vocalists was opened at the TGPII. Between 1976 and 1980 the institute trained 366 specialists in 26 specialities. In the 1980–1981 academic year, 150 teachers worked at the TGPII and 436 students were enrolled, including 25 in the correspondence department. During the 1980s the TGPII had three faculties: arts, cultural and educational work, and music pedagogy. The TGPII also acted as a patron for all secondary-level music institutions in the Turkmen SSR — music schools, the cultural and educational technical college, music colleges and the college of arts. In 1992 the TGPII was reorganised, and on its basis the Ashgabat State Conservatory and the Turkmen State Institute of Culture were created. In 2011 a new building for the institute opened in the 'creative town' at the intersection of '10 yyl Abadanchilyk' and Atatürk streets. In 2019 the institute took over the training of students in the fields of 'tourism business' and 'hotel business', which had previously been handled by the National Institute of Sports and Tourism. As of 2024 the institute comprises four faculties: the Faculty of Theatre Arts, the Faculty of Cultural Heritage, the Faculty of Library Science, and the Faculty of Tourism.
