Overview

Turista Magazin (also known as Természetjáró Turista Magazin) is a Hungarian magazine dedicated to nature hiking, outdoor exploration and knowledge about Hungary's built and natural heritage. It is published by the Magyar Természetjáró Szövetség (Hungarian Hiking Association). The magazine appears in both print and digital form, with ten issues per year (the July–August and December–January issues are combined), and its website, www.turistamagazin.hu, is updated daily with destination guides, hiking route descriptions and news. While the focus is primarily on Hungary's landscapes, monuments and natural treasures, the magazine also frequently covers destinations across the wider Carpathian Basin. The publication's roots go back to the earliest Hungarian tourist periodicals. The first officially organized Hungarian tourist body, the Magyarországi Kárpátegylet (Hungarian Carpathian Association), was founded in 1873, and its Budapest branch launched Turisták Lapja in 1889, edited by Dr. Ödön Téry and Dr. Gusztáv Thirring. That journal ran for 56 volumes, with its 346th issue appearing in December 1944. After World War II, tourist publishing was taken over by the state; from 1955 the sports committee published Természetjárás, which from July 1960 continued under the title Turista. In 1971 the magazine took its current name, Turista Magazin. Publication was suspended in July 1999, with no issues in 2000. In July 2001 the Timp Kft. restarted the magazine as volume 112 after acquiring the publishing rights from the state. In 2003 the Kornétás Kiadó took over the rights, but at the end of 2004 (volume 115) it ceased Turista Magazin and merged it with its Mount Everest magazine (launched in October 2001) to create Hegyisport és Turista Magazin (HTM). In 2009 the situation changed again: HTM became a standalone magazine and Turista Magazin was relaunched under its own name, with the word "Természetbarát" added to its masthead in reference to the Magyar Természetbarát Szövetség, though it was still published by Kornétás Kiadó. In 2012, when the Magyar Természetjáró Szövetség (MTSZ) was reorganized, the magazine found a stable home; since July 2012 it has appeared as Természetjáró Turista Magazin under the MTSZ. Because of the many ownership and name changes, volume numbering was sometimes restarted and sometimes continued, so the MTSZ decided to omit volume numbers altogether. Today Turista Magazin serves as a key media outlet for Hungary's hiking community, combining practical route guides, gear and safety advice, nature and heritage features, and news about trails such as the Országos Kéktúra (National Blue Trail). Its website hosts daily articles, a print-issue archive, subscription services and interactive features such as the "Év kilátója" (Lookout of the Year) vote.

History

The history of Turista Magazin is intertwined with the development of organized hiking and tourist publishing in Hungary. The first officially organized Hungarian tourist body, the Magyarországi Kárpátegylet (Hungarian Carpathian Association), was founded on 10 August 1873 in Tátrafüred. At its founding assembly it decided to report annually in a yearbook, and the first yearbook appeared in 1874. However, the yearbook format proved insufficient for the growing tourist community, which needed a more frequently published journal. When the Budapest branch of the Magyarországi Kárpátegylet (MKE) was re-established on 28 December 1888, one of its main goals was to launch a tourist journal, the lack of which was keenly felt in Hungary. At its first board meeting the new committee decided to publish a journal to spread tourism and local knowledge. The first issue of Turisták Lapja appeared in early February 1889, edited by Dr. Ödön Téry and Dr. Gusztáv Thirring, printed in 1,200 copies instead of the planned 500. On 29 September 1891 the Budapest branch separated from the MKE and continued as the independent Magyar Turista Egyesület (MTE), taking over the publication of Turisták Lapja. It became the longest-running tourist journal under the same title, reaching 56 volumes, with its 346th issue published in December 1944. Turisták Lapja influenced other associations, many of which considered it their official organ. From 1892 the Erdélyi Kárpát-Egyesület published Erdély; from 1894 the MTE Teachers' Section had Turista Közlöny; from 1910 the Budapesti Egyetemi Turista Egyesület published Turistaság és Alpinizmus; and from 1912 the Természetbarátok Turista Egyesülete published Természetbarát. After World War II, state liquidation of civil tourist organizations ended the MTE's operations. Between 1945 and 1946 no tourist journal was permitted. Természetbarát could continue from 1947 to 1951. From then on, tourist publishing was entirely in state hands. From 1948 Sport és Testnevelés appeared, the monthly of the National Physical Education and Sports Committee, but it carried very few tourist articles. The same body published Természetjárás from April 1955, which—after a pause in 1956–57—continued under that title until June 1960. From July 1960 the magazine was published as Turista (with continuous volume and issue numbering). In 1971 another name change produced the current title: Turista Magazin. Publication was discontinued in July 1999, and no issue appeared in 2000. In July 2001 Timp Kft., having acquired the publishing rights from the state, relaunched Turista Magazin as volume 112. In 2003 Kornétás Kiadó acquired the publishing rights. At the end of 2004 (volume 115) the publisher ceased Turista Magazin and merged it with its magazine Mount Everest (launched in October 2001) to create Hegyisport és Turista Magazin (HTM). In 2009 the situation changed again: HTM became a standalone magazine, and Turista Magazin was relaunched under its own name. The word "Természetbarát" was added to its masthead, referring to the Magyar Természetbarát Szövetség, although the magazine was still published by Kornétás Kiadó. In 2012, when the Magyar Természetjáró Szövetség (MTSZ) was reorganized, the magazine's life settled. Since July 2012 it has appeared as Természetjáró Turista Magazin under the care of the MTSZ. Because of the many ownership and name changes, volume numbering was sometimes restarted and sometimes continued, so the MTSZ decided to omit volume numbers. Today the magazine is published ten times a year (with combined July–August and December–January issues) and its website is updated daily with destination guides, hiking route descriptions and news, focusing primarily on Hungary's built and natural treasures but also covering Carpathian Basin destinations.
