Overview

Tunguska E.M.S. (Tunguska Electronic Music Society) is a free-music community and independent net-label operating in Russia and Germany, distributing melodic instrumental and electronic music under Creative Commons licenses. The project was organized by musicians and composers ahead of the 100th anniversary of the Tunguska event of 1908, aiming to draw public attention to that unusual phenomenon. Its creative laboratory is based on a forum and has been active since 11 April 2007. Within its first year the community selected more than a hundred exclusive author tracks and released the first disc in the "Tunguska Chillout Grooves" series. Further searching for talented authors followed, and between 2009 and 2012 the releases "Tunguska Chillout Grooves vol.2 – vol.8", the triple sound-set "Ellipsis" and many other works appeared. All of these works can be freely downloaded from the music portal Jamendo. The community's manifesto describes it as a free creative association of free people writing free music for free people, founded on Mutual Respect, Love and Understanding. Anyone who shares the community's moral principles, ideas and goals may become a member. Its stated aim is to create a layer of alternative musical, video and film culture in which the dominant motivation for creativity is creativity itself. Funding comes from members' dues and listener donations. The music of Tunguska E.M.S. is today represented on all leading media portals of the planet through the "Tunguska Chillout Grooves" series and is heard by people around the world. The community was a winner in two categories of the Jamendo Awards 2011, the music award of the world's largest free-music web service. In 2010–2012 the community issued 21 DVD supplements to the magazines "Mir Fantastiki" and "CHIP (Russia)". Its music has been used repeatedly in programs of the German television channel ZDF. As of January 2013 it had more than 21,000 listeners on Last.fm. Beyond music, the community has been working on its first documentary-ecological film "Heart of the Taiga" and on music for films and projects of Animal Planet and Discovery History, for online presentations of GEO and National Geographic magazines, and for two computer-game and console manufacturers. Its logo, an orange sun, represents the star Salveira in the Greater Argon system, whose ship according to the community's legend crashed over Tunguska in 1908.

History

Tunguska E.M.S. was created in April 2007 as a result of discussions on the RMMedia forum. Several fans of science fiction and chill-out music founded the community to work together on popularizing the genre in Russia. In addition, the authors hold their own view of the unusual event of 1908 known as the Tunguska meteorite (set out in Georgy Litvinov's novel "The Star Sentinel Running Along the Moonlit Path"), and the creation of the community was timed to its 100th anniversary in order to draw attention to the phenomenon. The original version of the legend reads: "7 hours 14 minutes. 30 June 1908. Planet Earth. Podkamennaya Tunguska. On approach for landing to relieve the next observation shift on the Moon, the Argon patrol cruiser 'Altion' suffers a disaster and, caught by Earth's magnetic field, rapidly enters the planet's atmosphere. At a height of several tens of kilometers above the surface, in order to avoid an ecological catastrophe, the crew detonates the propulsion units at the cost of their lives." The legend was later refined: on 30 June 1908 the Argon patrol cruiser "Altion" (Berkut in Russian), on a routine patrol flight not far from our satellite, discovered a dangerous combat probe of a former rebellious province of the Galaxy, disguised as a comet. The probe's goal was to destroy our planet as a valuable object close to joining the federation of peoples of the Galaxy. After a fierce battle, having exhausted its last resources, the cruiser Altion rammed and destroyed the dangerous probe. The wreckage of the cruiser fell in the area of Podkamennaya Tunguska, forming Lake Cheko, where three years later a second Argon research service conducted a rescue operation without analogue in history, evacuating and deactivating all artifacts at the disaster site. During the first year of work the first disc of the series, titled Tunguska Chillout Grooves, was released. A number of further music compilations followed. Starting in October 2009, Tunguska's music was repeatedly used in episodes of the program "Elektrischer Reporter" on the German television channel ZDF. According to G. Litvinov, by the end of 2010 the label's music had also been included in the sound archives of the ARD channel and the company Constantin Medien. From October 2010, music written by the community was regularly published on the DVD supplement to the magazine "Mir Fantastiki". Long-term cooperation with the publication for the release of all Tunguska releases was agreed. On 4 November 2014 Tunguska E.M.S. released its first joint album with the Wikimedia RU foundation in the 3plet format. The community's logo, an orange sun, is the star Salveira in the Greater Argon system, whose ship according to the legend crashed over Tunguska in 1908. The community was a winner in two categories of the Jamendo Awards 2011. In 2010–2012 it issued 21 DVD supplements to the magazines "Mir Fantastiki" and "CHIP (Russia)". As of January 2013 it had more than 21,000 listeners on Last.fm. In the present and future, the community has been working on editing its first documentary-ecological film "Heart of the Taiga" and on writing music for films and projects of Animal Planet and Discovery History channels, for online presentations of GEO and National Geographic magazines, and for two computer-game and console manufacturers.
