Overview
TUNAP (stylised as TUNAP) is an internationally operating German corporate group headquartered in Wolfratshausen, Bavaria. It develops, produces and distributes aerosols, lubricants and cleaning solutions for industrial and technical applications. The group operates through 13 companies with three production plants in Germany and Switzerland, and is a subsidiary of the Würth Group. Its business spans four core areas: TUNAP Automotive (chemical-technical products and services for the after-sales market of vehicle workshops), TUNAP Industry (lubricants such as oils, greases, pastes, waxes and paints for the plastics, food and heavy industries), TUNAP Private Brand (contract manufacturing of third-party brands for technical manufacturers and retailers), and TUNAP SPORTS (technical and cosmetic care products for the sports sector, especially bicycles). The company was founded by Markus Buchner in Munich and has grown into a group with more than 30,000 customers using its products and systems. Revenue has expanded from €63 million in 2003 to €136 million in 2010, €237 million in 2020 and €274 million in 2025. TUNAP operates sales locations across Europe, including Germany, Switzerland, Spain, Italy and the Netherlands, as well as in China and Brazil. The group celebrated its 50th anniversary, describing itself as having been effective for half a century. TUNAP's product range includes aerosols and active ingredients for industrial, technical and cosmetic applications. In 2019 the company presented a study on the phenomenon of pre-ignition in modern gasoline engines and brought the first additive against pre-ignition to market, designed to prevent deposits in the combustion chamber. In 2023 it received the business award of the Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen district. The group's heritage is linked to the automotive sector: founder Markus Buchner's grandfather, Max Buchner, established the first BMW contract workshop in Munich in 1928, which still operates as automag, the world's oldest BMW contract workshop. Through TUNAP Sports, the company sponsors the Ghost Factory Racing Team.
History
TUNAP was founded by Markus Buchner in Munich. The company's roots are closely tied to the automotive world: Markus Buchner's grandfather, Max Buchner, established the first BMW contract workshop in Munich in 1928, which continues to operate as automag, the world's oldest BMW contract workshop. Max Buchner also won the Rallye Internationale Alpenfahrt in 1929 driving a BMW Dixi. Over the decades, TUNAP grew into an internationally operating corporate group. Its headquarters moved to Wolfratshausen, where administration, sales, research and development facilities and one of its three production sites are located. The Wolfratshausen plant employs 160 people focused on chemical active ingredients and liquids. In 1997, TUNAP took over a production facility in Lichtenau, Saxony, covering 74,000 m², which expanded aerosol production in particular; 110 employees work there. A third production company was opened in 2000 in Märstetten, Switzerland, with 11,000 m² and 30 employees, producing around 45 million aerosol cans annually. In 2013, TUNAP acquired Your Own Brand GmbH (Neutraubling) and Kemacos Full-Filling Service GmbH (Kematen in Tirol), expanding sales and production capacities for cosmetic products. This business segment was sold in 2021 and employees were made redundant. In March 2019, the company presented a study on the phenomenon of pre-ignition that can occur in modern gasoline engines. In the same year, TUNAP brought the first additive against pre-ignition to market, designed to prevent deposits in the combustion chamber. In 2023, the company was awarded the business prize of the Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen district. Revenue development: €63 million in 2003, €136 million in 2010, €237 million in 2020 and €274 million in 2025. TUNAP has sales locations in Europe, including Germany, Switzerland, Spain, Italy and the Netherlands, as well as in China and Brazil. The group is a subsidiary of the Würth Group.
