Overview

TUM Records is a Finnish independent record label specializing in jazz and improvised music, headquartered in Helsinki. It was founded in 2003 by Petri Haussila, who remains the label's owner and driving force. The label's first release was the album Suhka by the formation Suhkan Uhka, a collective featuring musicians such as Antti Hytti, Jarmo Savolainen, Jone Takamäki, Juhani Aaltonen, Pekka Nylund, Seppo Kantonen, Tane Kannisto, Tom Nekljudow, Ulf Krokfors and Verneri Pohjola. Since its founding, TUM Records has built a catalog that spans Finnish and international jazz and improvised music. Among the Finnish artists it has released are Juhani Aaltonen, Raoul Björkenheim, Iro Haarla and Mikko Innanen. The label has also issued recordings by American and other international musicians, including Ahmed Abdullah, Barry Altschul, Billy Bang, Andrew Cyrille, Greg Osby, Wadada Leo Smith (A Love Sonnet for Billie Holiday) and the duo of Bill Laswell and Milford Graves (Space/Time – Redemption), as well as John Tchicai. TUM Records operates as a private, independent label rather than as part of a major corporate group. Its output is characterized by a focus on adventurous, improvisation-oriented jazz, often documenting both established veterans and collaborative projects. The label maintains an official website at tumrecords.com and its releases are documented in public discographies such as Discogs. It has been the subject of a label portrait published by All About Jazz in 2007.

History

TUM Records was founded in 2003 by Petri Haussila as a Finnish record label based in Helsinki. Its first production was the album Suhka by the formation Suhkan Uhka, a collective that brought together musicians including Antti Hytti, Jarmo Savolainen, Jone Takamäki, Juhani Aaltonen, Pekka Nylund, Seppo Kantonen, Tane Kannisto, Tom Nekljudow, Ulf Krokfors and Verneri Pohjola. From that starting point the label developed a catalog centered on jazz and improvised music. The label also expanded internationally, issuing albums by American and other musicians such as Ahmed Abdullah, Barry Altschul, Billy Bang, Andrew Cyrille, Greg Osby, Wadada Leo Smith (A Love Sonnet for Billie Holiday) and the duo of Bill Laswell and Milford Graves (Space/Time – Redemption), as well as John Tchicai. In 2007 the label was the subject of a portrait by Marc Medwin published by All About Jazz, reflecting its growing profile in the jazz community. TUM Records continues to operate as an independent label with an official website and a catalog documented on Discogs.
