Overview

TUI InfoTec GmbH is the information technology services company of the German travel group TUI AG. It was established in 1997 as a separate legal entity carved out of the information systems department of the then TUI GmbH & Co. KG, and it has grown alongside the Hanover-based travel operator through its acquisitions and international expansion. Today it is a wholly owned subsidiary of TUI AG and serves the worldwide TUI Group — a network of more than 700 companies spanning travel agencies, tour operators, airlines and hotel companies — as well as customers outside the TUI Group. The company is headquartered in Hanover, where it runs software development, software maintenance and two redundant data centres. Its roughly 340 IT specialists deliver services ranging from application lifecycle management, application migration and modernisation, IT infrastructure and data centre services, to virtualisation and cloud services (IaaS, PaaS and SaaS), as well as IT service management according to ITIL. TUI InfoTec also owns subsidiaries in the travel technology space: travel-BA.Sys in Mülheim an der Ruhr, which focuses on software solutions for the travel agency industry, and Berlin-based Accon RVS, a full-service provider of commercial travel agency applications. Historically, TUI InfoTec has been closely tied to the corporate development of its parent. It became part of the Preussag Aktiengesellschaft when TUI was integrated into Preussag in 1998. In 2001 it began pursuing an offshoring model and selected the Indian software provider Sonata Software Ltd. as a strategic IT partner for joint software development. In 2004 the IT department of the Hapag-Lloyd airline was integrated into TUI InfoTec. In 2006 the company was set up as a joint venture between Sonata and TUI, with TUI Travel PLC holding 49.9 percent and the India-listed Sonata Software Ltd. holding 50.1 percent. TUI Travel PLC took over 100 percent of the shares in 2011, and following the 2014 merger of TUI AG and TUI Travel to form the world's leading integrated tourism group, TUI GROUP, all shares of TUI InfoTec passed to TUI AG. As an internal and external IT service provider, TUI InfoTec occupies a specialised position within the TUI corporate structure: it is not a consumer-facing travel brand but the technology backbone supporting the group's travel agencies, tour operators, airlines and hotels, while also offering its services to third-party clients.

History

TUI InfoTec GmbH was created in 1997 as an independent company out of the information systems division of TUI. Together with the changes and acquisitions of the Hanover-based travel provider, the IT service provider grew continuously with an increasingly international and industry-independent orientation. Today TUI InfoTec operates as a 100 percent holding of TUI AG for the globally active TUI GROUP, which comprises more than 700 companies — from travel agencies and tour operators to airlines and hotel companies — as well as for customers outside the TUI Group. In 1997 TUI InfoTec emerged from the IT department of the then TUI GmbH & Co. KG and became its internet service provider. In 1998 TUI was integrated into Preussag Aktiengesellschaft. In 2001, recognising the need for cost optimisation, TUI InfoTec identified the possibility of an offshoring model and sought contact with Indian software providers, among others. After evaluations and pilot phases in projects, Sonata Software Ltd. was selected as a strategic IT partner for joint software development. The first projects were initially carried out in the United Kingdom because of the lower language barrier. Technology projects in Germany were then started and processes for collaboration were developed. In 2004 the IT division of the Hapag-Lloyd airline was integrated as its internet service provider. In 2006 TUI InfoTec was set up as a joint venture between Sonata and TUI. While the travel group TUI Travel PLC held 49.9 percent, the India-listed Sonata Software Ltd. acquired 50.1 percent of the company. In 2011 TUI Travel PLC took over 100 percent of the shares of TUI InfoTec. In 2014, through the merger of TUI AG and TUI Travel, the world's leading integrated tourism group TUI GROUP was created, and 100 percent of the shares of TUI InfoTec passed to TUI AG. TUI InfoTec's subsidiaries include travel-BA.Sys, a company in Mülheim an der Ruhr that handles software solutions for the travel agency industry, and Berlin-based Accon RVS, a full-service provider for commercial travel agency applications. The headquarters of TUI InfoTec is in Hanover. Here the company operates software development, software maintenance and two redundant data centres. Around 340 IT specialists provide services from application lifecycle management through application migration and modernisation, IT infrastructure and data centre services, to virtualisation and cloud services (IaaS, PaaS and SaaS) as well as IT service management according to ITIL.
