Overview

Tual State Fisheries Polytechnic (Indonesian: Politeknik Perikanan Negeri Tual, commonly abbreviated Polikant) is a state vocational higher-education institution in Maluku Tenggara Regency, Maluku Province, Indonesia. Although it is located in Maluku Tenggara Regency, it takes its name from the nearby city of Tual. The campus sits in the Kei Islands, an archipelago far from the provincial capital of Ambon, in a region with substantial fisheries potential. It is the only state polytechnic in Indonesia under the Ministry of Education and Culture that specializes in vocational higher education in fisheries and marine affairs. The institution traces its origins to Akademi Perikanan Larvul Ngabal, a fisheries academy founded in 1997 and managed by the Larvul Ngabal Higher Education Foundation, which belonged to the Maluku Tenggara Regency government. In 2004 the academy changed status to a state higher-education institution under the name Politeknik Perikanan Negeri Tual, becoming a work unit of Indonesia's Ministry of National Education (now the Ministry of Education and Culture). Polikant offers D3 (diploma) and D4 (applied bachelor's) programs through its Fisheries Product Technology department and related study programs. Its academic portfolio covers fisheries product technology, fisheries agribusiness, aquaculture technology, fishing technology, marine technology, fisheries biotechnology, marine aquaculture engineering, marine agritourism, fisheries product processing engineering management, and capture fisheries engineering management. The polytechnic serves as a regional center for vocational training and applied research supporting the fisheries and marine sectors of the Kei Islands and Maluku more broadly.

History

The institution began as Akademi Perikanan Larvul Ngabal, a fisheries academy established in 1997 and managed by the Larvul Ngabal Higher Education Foundation, which was owned by the Maluku Tenggara Regency government. It remains the only state polytechnic in Indonesia under the Ministry of Education and Culture that focuses on vocational higher education in fisheries and marine affairs. The polytechnic is located in the Kei Islands, a region far from the provincial capital Ambon and endowed with significant fisheries potential.
