Overview
ttz Bremerhaven — the Technologie-Transfer-Zentrum Bremerhaven — is an independent research service provider based in Bremerhaven, Germany. It was founded in 1987 as a registered association, the Verein zur Förderung des Technologietransfers an der Hochschule Bremerhaven e. V., with the aim of supporting the transfer activities of Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences. Under the umbrella of that association, ttz Bremerhaven has developed into an applied research and development organisation that works with companies of all sizes on product and process innovation. The organisation describes itself as an innovative provider of research services performing applied research and development. Its international team of experts works in the areas of food, environment and health, and its core competence is customer-specific, market-oriented and cost-effective product and process innovation for the food industry and related sectors. Research units bundle their know-how to turn the most progressive solutions into reality, and an extensive international network gives access to expert knowledge for highly specialised questions. ttz Bremerhaven operates across seven competence fields, including food technology, analytics for process optimisation, climate economics and SYNFUELS. Its analytics work helps companies translate customer expectations for their products into measurable quantities, selecting or adapting existing measurement methods and developing new ones where needed. The organisation's strength lies in treating analytics as part of a holistic view of product and process, focusing on the relationship between molecular composition and functionality. This is implemented by an interdisciplinary team of chemists and process engineers with application knowledge in food processing and environmental technologies, supported by well-equipped laboratories for wet chemistry, chromatography, physical analytics and microbiology. On more than 1,000 square metres of pilot-plant space (the German-language site mentions over 3,000 square metres of Technikum area), ttz Bremerhaven offers state-of-the-art engineering and laboratory equipment for trials and industrial upscaling. It also maintains a sensory laboratory with ten testing booths and a database of more than 7,000 consumers from the Bremerhaven, Cuxhaven and Bremen region. The organisation is closely connected locally and regionally with industry and scientific institutions, which forms the basis for high-quality collaboration on numerous projects. ttz Bremerhaven is legally a registered association. Its members include the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen, Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences and the city of Bremerhaven. The chair of the board is Jörg Peters. Around 90 percent of its funding comes from third-party sources — industry and international, European and national research projects — while the state of Bremen provides a basic funding of €684,000 per year. Its mission is to offer high added value, market-oriented applications, and customised, cost-effective solutions for companies innovating in processes and products, under the guiding principle of 'Research for more Quality of Life'.
