Overview
Tsurumi Concrete Co., Ltd. (鶴見コンクリート株式会社) is a Japanese manufacturer of precast concrete secondary products headquartered in Tsurumi-ku, Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture. The company traces its origins to the establishment of a factory in 1926 (Taisho 15), when it began manufacturing and selling reinforced concrete pipes; the present corporation was formally established in April 1949 (Showa 24). Its core business is the manufacture and sale of various concrete products, the design and contracting of civil engineering and building works, and the development, manufacture and sale of special products. Its main customers are public-sector bodies such as the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, local governments and the Urban Renaissance Agency, as well as land readjustment associations, electric power companies and construction firms. The company's product range centres on precast concrete secondary products for infrastructure. These include box culverts (including the MMS box culvert), precast stormwater storage and infiltration tanks (precast adjustment ponds and retarding basins), open channels, retaining walls, fire water tanks, garages, common utility ducts and road-use concrete products. It also offers construction methods such as the open shield method, the roller slide S method and the RPC method (a pipe rehabilitation method). The company provides CAD data for standard products listed in its catalogues to improve customer convenience. Tsurumi Concrete has a long record of industry firsts in Japan. It was the first in eastern Japan to obtain JIS certification for reinforced concrete pipes, and in 1963 (Showa 38) it became the first in Japan to obtain JIS certification for road-use products. In 1962 (Showa 37) it became the first in Japan to make box culverts precast. In 2021 it introduced Japan's first automatic reinforcing bar cutting and bending machine (uncoiler) in the industry, reducing rebar joints, rebar usage, waste and CO2 emissions. Its precast members were used to build the ventilation tower of Shin-Tsunashima Station on the Tokyu Shin-Yokohama Line, which opened on 18 March 2023. The company operates from its headquarters in Yokohama and an Isesaki? — more precisely, an Isesaki? no, an Isehara factory in Kanagawa Prefecture — plus sales offices in Saitama, Tokyo, Yokohama, Shonan and Shizuoka. It holds ISO 9001 certification for the design, development and manufacture of precast concrete, and is a member of numerous industry associations including the Japan Sewage Works Association, the Japan Concrete Institute and the Precast Stormwater Underground Storage Association. Its fiscal year ends in March. The company is privately held, with stated capital of 100 million yen and approximately 100 employees. It continues to position itself for its next 100 years under the message "next stage".
History
Tsurumi Concrete's history begins in 1926 (Taisho 15), when a factory was established and the manufacture and sale of reinforced concrete pipes commenced. In 1939 (Showa 14) the company began selling centrifugal reinforced concrete pipes for agricultural civil engineering. In 1952 (Showa 27) it became the first company in eastern Japan to obtain JIS certification for reinforced concrete pipes, and in 1953 (Showa 28) it became the first in Japan to obtain JIS certification for road-use products. In 1961 (Showa 36) it registered a utility model for the Tsurumi-style cross culvert. In 1962 (Showa 37) it became the first in Japan to make box culverts precast. In 1967 (Showa 42) it conducted a public experiment of a longitudinally connected box culvert and obtained JIS certification for centrifugal reinforced concrete pipes. In 1970 (Showa 45) it installed Japan's first precast box culvert for the Japan Highway Public Corporation on the Tohoku Expressway (the Tsurumi-style box culvert). In 1973 (Showa 48) it developed the Tsurumi-style CP box culvert. In 1974 (Showa 49) it obtained a general construction business license. In 1994 (Heisei 6) it obtained Minister of Construction certification for the Tsurumi-style basement and established the Precast Stormwater Underground Storage Association. In 1995 (Heisei 7) it obtained certification as a certified factory for sewerage equipment from the Japan Sewage Works Association (sewerage box culverts) and published a design and construction manual for precast adjustment ponds and retarding basins from the Japan Sewage Works Association's new technology promotion organization. In 1996 (Heisei 8) it published the seismic edition of that manual and obtained certification for seismic water tanks from the Japan Fire Equipment Safety Center. In 1997 (Heisei 9) it obtained the first technology recommendation under the evaluation and certification system of the Rainwater Storage and Infiltration Technology Association (Tsurumi-style retarding basin). In 1999 (Heisei 11) it began selling a new model of precast garage. In 2000 (Heisei 12) it developed and publicly demonstrated the RPC method (pipe rehabilitation method). In 2001 (Heisei 13) the RPC method was first applied in Tokyo (Nezu, Bunkyo Ward). In 2003 (Heisei 15) the Isehara factory obtained JIS factory certification for precast concrete products. In 2005 (Heisei 17) the RPC method obtained construction technology review certification. In 2006 (Heisei 18) it obtained ISO 9001 certification for the design, development and manufacture of precast concrete. In 2008 (Heisei 20) the Isehara factory obtained new JIS factory certification for precast reinforced concrete products and precast prestressed concrete products. In 2011 (Heisei 23) it began manufacturing hale-salt concrete products. In 2012 (Heisei 24) the MMS box culvert obtained construction technology review certification. In 2013 (Heisei 25) the box culvert obtained Class I certified equipment status from the Japan Sewage Works Association.
