Overview
Tsuruhan Japan Co., Ltd. (株式会社つるはんJAPAN) is a Japanese restaurant operating company headquartered in Nishinakajima, Yodogawa-ku, Osaka. Its business is the operation of restaurants and food service outlets, primarily located within the Daimaru and Matsuzakaya department stores and in shopping centers across Japan. The company traces its origins to 1971, when it was established as Restaurant Peacock Co., Ltd. by spinning off from Peacock Sangyo (later Aeon Market), then a subsidiary of Daimaru. Over the following decades it expanded its restaurant operations in Daimaru stores and regional shopping centers. A parallel lineage, Shoei Foods Co., Ltd., began in 1929 as Dohosha Co., Ltd. and opened dining rooms in Matsuzakaya's Ueno and Ginza stores in 1930, later expanding to other Matsuzakaya locations, the Misonoza theater, and Hankyu Nishinomiya Gardens. In 2009, under the newly formed J. Front Retailing group, Restaurant Peacock and Shoei Foods were integrated to create J. Front Foods Co., Ltd. J. Front Foods handled the restaurant business of J. Front Retailing, but performance declined amid changes in department store restaurant floors and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2021, J. Front Retailing sold all shares of J. Front Foods to Osaka-based Dancing Diner Co., Ltd., effective February 26, 2021. On the same date, J. Front Foods became a wholly owned subsidiary of Dancing Diner and changed its name to Tsuruhan Japan Co., Ltd. J. Front Retailing exited the restaurant business. As of April 2025, Tsuruhan Japan operates 24 stores and employs 464 people, with annual sales of approximately 2.2 billion yen in fiscal 2024. Its stated mission is to be trusted by society through fair and appropriate corporate activities in compliance with laws and rules; its vision is to be a restaurant company that provides joy, satisfaction, and happiness to customers through the pursuit of deliciousness and hospitality; and its values emphasize customer-first service, employee fulfillment, and contribution to local communities.
History
Tsuruhan Japan's history is the product of two restaurant lineages that were eventually merged under the J. Front Retailing group and later sold to Dancing Diner. The first lineage began on October 1, 1971, when Restaurant Peacock Co., Ltd. was established by spinning off from Peacock Sangyo Co., Ltd. (later Aeon Market), which was then a subsidiary of Daimaru. Restaurant Peacock developed restaurant operations in Daimaru stores and in shopping centers around Japan. In 1985 it opened a 'Sanbee' outlet at Narita International Airport, and in 2005 it opened 'Cafe Yutori no Kukan,' produced by Harumi Kurihara, at Chubu Centrair International Airport. The second lineage began on March 4, 1929, when Dohosha Co., Ltd. was established. In 1930 it changed its name to Sakaeya Co., Ltd. and opened dining rooms in Matsuzakaya's Ueno and Ginza stores. It was renamed Shoeisha Co., Ltd. in 1938, Tokiwa Food Industry Co., Ltd. in 1944, and again Shoeisha Co., Ltd. in 1946. In 1964 it opened a large dining room at the Misonoza theater. On December 1, 2008, it became a wholly owned subsidiary of J. Front Retailing. J. Front Retailing was formed in 2007. On December 25, 2008, it announced that effective March 1, 2009, Restaurant Peacock would be the surviving company and would absorb Shoei Foods, changing its name to J. Front Foods Co., Ltd. The integration was carried out on March 1, 2009, creating J. Front Foods. J. Front Foods operated the restaurant business of J. Front Retailing, but performance declined due to changes in department store restaurant floors and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. On January 7, 2021, J. Front Retailing announced it would transfer all shares of J. Front Foods to Osaka-based Dancing Diner Co., Ltd. effective February 26, 2021. On that date, J. Front Foods became a wholly owned subsidiary of Dancing Diner and changed its name to Tsuruhan Japan Co., Ltd. J. Front Retailing exited the restaurant business. As of April 2025, Tsuruhan Japan operates 24 stores and employs 464 people. Its headquarters is in Nishinakajima, Yodogawa-ku, Osaka. Its representative director and president is Ken Hattori.
