Overview

Tsukuba RIKA Seiki Co., Ltd. (ツクバリカセイキ株式会社) is a Japanese engineering company headquartered at 212 Kaname, Tsukuba, Ibaraki, dedicated to fluid measurement technology. It designs and builds research equipment and develops measurement systems, positioning itself as a pioneer in fluid measurement. Its work spans the automotive, home-appliance, construction, aviation and space industries, and it supports customers from standard products conforming to various standards through to fully custom measurement systems. The company's business covers both "mono-uri" (selling products) and "koto-uri" (selling solutions/services). On the product side it offers pitot tubes, manometers, standard fluid-measurement devices, smoke and soap-bubble generators, and other fluid-measurement apparatus. On the solutions side it provides design and fabrication of wind-tunnel and water-tank test facilities, automation of measurement via personal computers, and measurement and calibration services. It combines the functions of an equipment manufacturer, a system house and a software house. Tsukuba RIKA Seiki was founded in April 1983 with capital of 5 million yen, growing out of a Tsukuba branch office of Rika Seiki Kogyo established in 1979. It increased its capital in stages (10 million yen in 1990, 20 million yen in 1997, 30 million yen in 2007) and in 1999 inherited the business of Rika Seiki Kogyo, expanding nationwide. Its representative director is Kazunobu Hama, who took the role in 2016. The company is a member of Ibaraki Prefecture's IRDA research-and-development-oriented enterprise exchange. Its customers include major Japanese corporations such as IHI, Sony, Hitachi, Toyota, Honda R&D, Fujifilm, Kajima, Fujitsu, Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Tokyo Electric Power, Panasonic, Nissan, Toshiba, Nidec, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, SUBARU, Mitsubishi Electric and Canon, as well as universities and research institutes including JAXA, AIST, the University of Tokyo, Kyushu University, Waseda University and the National Institute for Environmental Studies. The company remains privately held and active.

History

Tsukuba RIKA Seiki traces its origins to 1979, when Rika Seiki Kogyo established a Tsukuba branch office. In 1981 the organization developed an analog fan airflow measurement device, an early step into fluid measurement instrumentation. In April 1983, Tsukuba RIKA Seiki was founded as a separate company with capital of 5 million yen. The 1980s saw the company move into computer-based measurement: in 1984 it developed and began selling a PC-based automatic fan airflow measurement device. In 1986 Toshiaki Nakayama became representative director. In 1989 the company completed its head office building in Kaname, Tsukuba, relocating from Arakawaoki. In 1990 capital was increased to 10 million yen and the company developed and began selling a 4-channel AD board for notebook PCs. In the 1990s the company broadened its product range and activities. It began selling a micro airflow measurement device (mass-flow type) in 1995, started activities in the Ibaraki technology exchange association IRDA in 1996, and increased capital to 20 million yen in 1997. In 1999 it inherited the business of Rika Seiki Kogyo and expanded nationwide, and it developed a quadrupole mass filter through joint research with what was then the Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute. In 2000 it built a hydrogen replacement device for Kabura calibration for JQA, and in 2001 a traceability-compatible wind-tunnel device for JQA. In the 2000s the company continued to develop specialized systems and expand its footprint. It began accepting research internships in 2002 and started acting as secretariat for the "Small Fan Research Group" in 2003, the same year it developed a pressure-loss measurement system for automotive parts. It opened a Tokyo sales office in 2004 and began manufacturing and selling the F-4115 noise plenum. Capital was increased to 30 million yen in 2007. In 2008 it developed and sold the IEM-04 insect-bite monitor. In 2011 it began series production and sales of the F-512 vehicle body leakage inspection system, and in 2015 it began selling the F-810 steam generator "Honoka." In 2016 Kazunobu Hama became representative director. The company continues to operate as a privately held specialist in fluid measurement, serving corporate, university and research-institute customers in Japan and presenting its technical work in publications such as the journal Turbomachinery.
