History

Tsukishima Kikai traces its origins to 1905, when it was founded as Tokyo Tsukishima Kikai Seisakusho in what is now Tsukishima 4-chome, Chuo-ku, Tokyo. The Tokyo plant began as a small workshop with only about a dozen employees. At a time when Japanese industry imported foreign-made manufacturing machinery and equipment, the company succeeded early in domestic production of sugar manufacturing machinery and ammonium sulfate production equipment, expanding its business and moving into chemical fiber and salt manufacturing fields. In its early days Tsukishima had no electricity, and steam engines were used as the power source. As Japan's industrial structure shifted from light to heavy industry, the company moved into heavy chemical industries such as aluminum and magnesium, and built the Tsurumi Plant in Tsurumi-ku, Yokohama, to strengthen and modernize production facilities. It developed as a machinery maker in the chemical, machinery and steel fields, and in the 1960s entered the water and sewage field, manufacturing many water and sewage facilities and contributing to the spread of domestic water infrastructure. The Tsurumi Plant escaped damage in the Pacific War and supported postwar recovery and high economic growth. To respond to the limits of Tsurumi's production capacity and to demand for larger products, the Ichikawa Plant was built in the coastal area of Ichikawa, Chiba Prefecture, equipped with modern manufacturing facilities and enabling marine transport of large products; products were exported not only domestically but around the world. In 1985 a second plant focused on equipment assembly was added. In 2019 manufacturing functions were relocated to the Muroran Plant, which introduced state-of-the-art machinery; the Muroran Plant is located within the Muroran Works of Japan Steel Works, Ltd., and uses Japan Steel Works' wharf for marine transport of large products. In April 2023 the company moved to a holding company structure: the trade name was changed to Tsukishima Holdings Co., Ltd., and the industrial business was succeeded by Tsukishima Machine Sales, whose trade name was changed to Tsukishima Kikai Co., Ltd.
