Tsukishima Foods Industry Co., Ltd.

Tsukishima Foods Industry Co., Ltd. is a Japanese company that develops, produces and sells edible processed oils and fats — represented by commercial margarine — as well as chocolate, frozen dough and frozen cakes. Founded in December 1948 in Tsukishima, Tokyo, it began margarine production in 1949 and has since supplied food-material products to industries including bread, confectionery, biscuits, frozen foods and instant noodles. The company frames its work around 'scientifically understanding the deliciousness of food' and sustainability, and operates under the Tsukishima Foods Group.

Tsukishima Foods Industry Co., Ltd. was established on December 15, 1948, in Tsukishima, Tokyo, led by founder Ryosuke Hashitani together with Yasuyoshi Hashimoto and Mitsusaku Yamada, in the severe postwar shortage of goods and food. The company learned margarine manufacturing technology under the guidance of Dr. Zenzaemon Ishizaka and began the business. In 1949 it became a Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry certified plant and started margarine production, and launched 'Tsukishima-brand margarine wooden box'. In the 1950s it introduced a Votator in 1954, enabling stable continuous production of margarine and shortening, and in 1955 launched 'Soft Margarine', described as the industry's first soft-type spread margarine, which received the Minister of Agriculture and Forestry Award. In the 1960s the company shifted from oils and fats toward foods, began producing lard and fermented milk, and in 1962 relocated its head office and plant from Tsukishima in Chuo Ward to Myokenjima in Edogawa Ward to expand production capacity; in 1964 it completed a refining plant in Tokyo, establishing in-house raw-material refining.
