Overview
Trybuna Górnicza (Mining Tribune) is a Polish weekly trade newspaper aimed at the mining and mining-related community. It has been published since 9 June 1994 in the mining municipalities of the Silesian and Lesser Poland voivodeships. Its editorial office is based in Katowice, and it is published by Wydawnictwo Gospodarcze Sp. z o.o. (formerly Wydawnictwo Górnicze). The weekly covers the mining, energy, metallurgy, coking and environmental sectors. It also addresses topics related to mining traditions and the cultural heritage of the mining community and the region. The name Trybuna Górnicza reflects the fact that it was originally distributed together with Trybuna Śląska, then published in the Katowice voivodeship, and was addressed to the mining community. From 2005 to 2020 it was distributed with Dziennik Zachodni; since 13 February 2020 it has been distributed independently, initially by subscription only, at a cover price of 2.50 PLN (3.50 PLN from 13 January 2022, 4.50 PLN from 3 January 2025). The first issue appeared on 9 June 1994 with an estimated print run of 47,000 copies as a supplement to Trybuna Śląska, distributed in mining municipalities. It had 8 pages and was printed on green-tinted paper, a reference to mining colours, which earned it the nicknames "zielona Trybuna" (green Tribune) and "zielony dodatek" (green supplement). The founder and first editor-in-chief was Ryszard Fedorowski, who prepared the concept of the magazine with Wojciech Niedziela and Jan Dziadul. The initial print run was 70,000 copies. Over the years the weekly has changed editors-in-chief, layouts and distribution models. In 2001 Wydawnictwo Górnicze merged with the publisher of Wiadomości Górnicze. In 2003 Jan Czypionka took charge of the publishing house and the editorial team, which moved to Plebiscytowa Street. On 11 March 2004 the "Po Szychcie" column (initially a supplement) was introduced, an idea by Krystian Krawczyk, later editor-in-chief (2007–2023). On 11 September 2007 the netTG.pl portal was launched, covering the economy and people's problems. In January 2008 the weekly adopted a more modern graphic design, and another layout and masthead change came in June 2019 for its 25th anniversary. In October 2008 Witold Pustułka became president of Wydawnictwo Górnicze. The 1000th issue appeared on 19 December 2013, and the 1500th on 4 August 2023. In 2017 Anna Zych joined the management board, becoming president in 2021. In December 2017 the second portal, EnergiaPress.pl, was launched. In August 2020 Wydawnictwo Górnicze changed its name to Wydawnictwo Gospodarcze. In 2023 Anna Zych became editor-in-chief. In 2024 the print run was 6,000 copies. Today Trybuna Górnicza remains a niche but established trade weekly, with its main publications also available on the publisher's website and through the netTG.pl and EnergiaPress.pl portals.
History
Trybuna Górnicza was first published on 9 June 1994 as a supplement to Trybuna Śląska, with an estimated print run of 47,000 copies. It was distributed in mining municipalities and had 8 pages. Printed on green-tinted paper to reference mining colours, it was nicknamed "zielona Trybuna" (green Tribune) and "zielony dodatek" (green supplement). The founder and first editor-in-chief was Ryszard Fedorowski, who prepared the concept with Wojciech Niedziela and Jan Dziadul. The first team included journalists Jan Czypionka, Anna Lubiejewska, Barbara Namysł, Eugenia Plucik, photographer Bogdan Kułakowski and graphic designer Ryszard Twardoch. The editorial office was located in four rooms of the State Hard Coal Agency (Kompania Węglowa) in Katowice at 30 Powstańców Street. It was published by Górnośląskie Towarzystwo Prasowe on behalf of Wydawnictwo Górnicze. The initial print run was 70,000 copies. In 1998 Witold Jajszczok became the second president of Wydawnictwo Górnicze and editor-in-chief. He led the weekly during difficult times for the mining industry – financial collapse and the beginnings of the major mining reform of the Jerzy Buzek government (1999–2001). Other editors-in-chief during this period were Maciej Wojciechowski (1999) and Janusz Kozłowski (2000–2003). In 2001 Wydawnictwo Górnicze merged with the publisher of Wiadomości Górnicze. The enlarged Wydawnictwo Górnicze published not only Trybuna Górnicza (and its later internet portals) but also scientific journals Wiadomości Górnicze, Karbo and Budownictwo Podziemne i Tunelowe, as well as technical books. In 2003 Jan Czypionka took charge of the publishing house and the editorial team, which moved to Plebiscytowa Street. On 11 March 2004 the "Po Szychcie" column (initially a supplement) was introduced, an idea by Krystian Krawczyk, later editor-in-chief (2007–2023) and previously editorial secretary and deputy editor-in-chief. From 2005 (or around December 2004) the weekly was distributed with Dziennik Zachodni (which had absorbed Trybuna Śląska). On 11 September 2007 the netTG.pl portal was launched, covering the economy and people's problems. The initiator was Krystian Krawczyk, editor-in-chief. The name was extended to netTG.pl Gospodarka–Ludzie. The portal began with coverage of the opening of the International Mining, Energy and Metallurgy Fair held at Katowice's Spodek. From January 2008 Trybuna Górnicza appeared in a renewed, more modern graphic design. Another layout and masthead change came in June 2019 for its 25th anniversary. In October 2008 Witold Pustułka, a former columnist for Dziennik Zachodni, became president of Wydawnictwo Górnicze. The 1000th issue appeared on 19 December 2013, and the 1500th less than ten years later on 4 August 2023. In 2017 Anna Zych, a long-time columnist for Trybuna Górnicza, joined the management board; in 2021 she became president of the board. In December 2017 the second portal of Wydawnictwo Gospodarcze – EnergiaPress.pl – was launched, a service on mining and energy for journalists (a multimedia service of the Agencja Gospodarcza Energia Press). From 13 February 2020 the weekly has been distributed independently, initially only by subscription (individual and through mining companies and hard coal mines), at a price of 2.50 PLN (3.50 PLN from 13 January 2022, 4.50 PLN from 3 January 2025). In August 2020 Wydawnictwo Górnicze changed its name to Wydawnictwo Gospodarcze. In 2023 Anna Zych became editor-in-chief. In 2024 the print run was 6,000 copies.
