History
TRUMPF traces its origins to Julius Geiger's mechanical workshop in Stuttgart, which Christian Trumpf acquired in 1923. The early business manufactured flexible shafts for transmitting mechanical power to drills and other tools. After the development of motorized drives, these products found wider uses in metalworking and woodworking. Headquarters and production moved to Ditzingen near Stuttgart in 1972, where the company established the base from which it developed into an international group. Because Christian Trumpf had no children, Hugo Schwarz became commercial director in 1953 and Berthold Leibinger became technical director in 1966. Leibinger gradually acquired the founding family's shares, and by 1972 Leibinger and Schwarz were the sole shareholders. Following Christian Trumpf's death in 1977, Leibinger became chief executive in 1978. His tenure was marked by major technical development, including numerical-path control for sheet-metal machines based on a coordinate-guidance patent connected with his academic work.
