History

Truecaller was established in Stockholm, Sweden, in 2009 by Alan Mamedi and Nami Zarringhalam. The founders sought to solve a basic problem of mobile communication: a telephone number often provides little information about the identity or legitimacy of the person or organization calling. Their response was a software service that could connect a number with a name or business identity and warn users when a number was associated with unwanted communication. The first version of Truecaller was released on July 1, 2009, for Symbian and Windows Mobile. Android and iPhone versions followed on September 23, 2009. The product later expanded to BlackBerry, Windows Phone and Nokia Series 40. Its early growth depended on the spread of smartphones, word-of-mouth adoption and the usefulness of community-generated caller information. Rather than functioning only as a conventional directory, Truecaller combined number searches with user reports and classifications. A number repeatedly marked as unwanted could become part of the service’s spam-warning system, while business numbers could be identified for consumers receiving legitimate calls. The service expanded quickly during the early 2010s. By September 2012, Truecaller reported five million users and approximately 120 million monthly searches. It reached ten million users in January 2013 and continued to gain traction in markets where telemarketing, fraud and unsolicited mobile communication were widespread. India became especially important. The company developed a substantial employee and operating presence there, and its product became a common layer of caller identification and spam protection for Indian smartphone users. Capital from outside investors helped fund international expansion. OpenOcean invested US$1.3 million in September 2012. Truecaller announced an US$18.8 million round involving Sequoia Capital and existing investors in February 2014, followed by an additional US$60 million round led by Atomico with participation from Kleiner Perkins in October 2014. These financings supported product development, geographic expansion and the construction of a larger technology and commercial organization. Truecaller broadened its product scope beyond incoming-call identification. In July 2015 it launched TrueMessenger in India, an Android messaging application designed to identify SMS senders and separate spam, fraud and marketing messages from ordinary conversations. The company later integrated TrueMessenger’s capabilities into the broader Truecaller application. It also developed or offered related communication functions such as flash messaging, chat, voice and call recording on older Android versions. Some of these features were subsequently de-emphasized as the company concentrated on caller trust, spam protection, subscriptions and business communications. The company’s monetization model evolved in stages. Advertising became a formal revenue source in 2016. In 2018, Truecaller introduced subscriptions, creating a second significant revenue stream and giving users access to additional features. In 2020, it launched Truecaller for Business, its first major business-to-business product. That offering extended the company’s identity and trust proposition to companies that wanted consumers to recognize their calls, verify their identity and engage with them more confidently. Truecaller’s growth also brought security and privacy scrutiny. In July 2013, the company disclosed that its website had been compromised in a cyberattack. Truecaller said attackers accessed tokens but not passwords or credit-card information, and stated that the tokens were reset. In 2019, the company acknowledged an iOS privacy issue involving an advertising SDK and separately fixed an application vulnerability reported by security researcher Ehraz Ahmed. The same period also brought criticism and public reporting concerning the collection and processing of contact information, the visibility of non-users in the directory, and claims of user-data leaks. Truecaller has maintained that its privacy and security practices are designed to comply with applicable law and that it does not sell user data. In India, the company faced additional scrutiny connected with a public-interest petition concerning data use and with an accidental activation of the UPI registration flow in a 2019 software update. Truecaller said the payments-registration incident resulted from a software bug and later stated that it discontinued its UPI payments service in March 2021. In Nigeria, litigation raised questions about whether Truecaller and its users should be treated as data controllers or processors in relation to contact information involving people who had not directly registered for the service. Truecaller prepared for public-market ownership during the late 2010s and early 2020s. In September 2021 it announced its intention to list Class B shares on Nasdaq Stockholm. The initial public offering was priced at SEK 52 per Class B share, and trading began on October 8, 2021, under the symbol TRUE B. The company used a dual-class structure, allowing the founders to retain significant voting influence after the listing. After the listing, Truecaller continued to focus on a platform model combining advertising, premium subscriptions and business services. It reported expanding user numbers, including more than 450 million active users in 2025 and more than 500 million by March 2026. The company also emphasized artificial intelligence, machine learning and community feedback to improve number classification and reduce false positives. Subscription growth became increasingly important as the company sought to diversify beyond advertising. A major technical and product turning point came with Apple’s iOS 18.2 release. In January 2025, Truecaller announced live Caller ID and automatic spam blocking for compatible iPhones, using Apple’s Live Caller ID Lookup framework and privacy-preserving lookup mechanisms. This reduced a longstanding difference between Truecaller’s Android and iOS experiences, where Android users had historically received more immediate caller-identification functionality. Leadership also shifted in 2025. Rishit Jhunjhunwala, who had worked at Truecaller since 2015 and previously served as chief product officer and managing director of Truecaller India, became CEO. Co-founder Alan Mamedi remained a board director, while co-founder Nami Zarringhalam continued as chairman. By 2026, Truecaller was presenting itself less as a standalone caller-ID utility and more as a global platform for trusted communication between individuals, businesses and service providers. Its future remains linked to the continuing scale of mobile fraud and spam, but also to regulatory expectations, privacy controls, carrier-level caller-identification systems and the ability to monetize protection without weakening user trust.

Products and positioning

A global trust and safety platform for telephone communication, positioned around caller verification, spam and scam protection, business identity and safer consumer-business contact.

  • Caller identification and communications · 2009

    Truecaller app

Truecaller’s core mobile application identifies incoming callers, supports reverse number searches and provides context about unknown telephone numbers. It combines directory information, verified business profiles, machine-learning systems and user reports. Depending on platform, market and subscription level, the app also offers call blocking, SMS filtering, messaging, chat, voice functions and other communication utilities. The application is available primarily on Android and iOS and requires mobile-number registration.

  • Identity and discovery feature · 2009

    Caller ID

The Caller ID feature displays information about incoming numbers before or during a call where the relevant operating-system permissions and product capabilities are available. It can show names, business identities, profile information and spam warnings. On Android, the feature has historically offered broader real-time integration. In 2025, Truecaller expanded live caller identification on compatible iPhones through Apple’s Live Caller ID Lookup framework.

  • Call safety and blocking · 2009

    Spam and scam protection

Truecaller’s spam-protection system classifies numbers using community reports, behavioral signals, machine learning and other data sources. Users can receive warnings about telemarketing, fraud, robocalls and other unwanted communications, and can block numbers or categories of numbers. The service is designed to update classifications as users report calls, although the crowdsourced nature of the system also creates questions about accuracy, false positives and the treatment of disputed labels.

  • Messaging safety · 2015

    SMS identification and spam filtering

The SMS product began as TrueMessenger, launched in India in 2015. It identified senders outside the user’s address book, separated suspected spam from ordinary messages and allowed users to report unwanted senders. Truecaller later integrated these functions into the main Android application, making text-message identification and filtering part of the wider communications platform.

  • Subscription service · 2018

    Truecaller Premium

Truecaller Premium is the company’s paid subscription offering. It provides access to additional caller-identification, privacy, spam-blocking and convenience features beyond the free, advertising-supported product. Premium has become an important part of Truecaller’s monetization strategy and is available through different plans depending on market and platform, including a family plan on supported iOS versions.

  • Business communications · 2020

    Truecaller for Business

Truecaller for Business extends the company’s identity and trust infrastructure to organizations. Its purpose is to help companies present verified identities, recognizable calling information and more reliable communication experiences when contacting consumers. The product supports Truecaller’s shift from a consumer utility toward a two-sided platform serving both individuals and businesses.

  • SMS application · 2015

    TrueMessenger

TrueMessenger was an Android SMS replacement application launched exclusively in India in July 2015. It used the Truecaller community to identify SMS senders, detect unwanted messages and organize spam into a separate inbox. The standalone product was later absorbed into the main Truecaller application rather than remaining a separate flagship service.

  • Real-time caller identification · 2025

Truecaller Live Caller ID for iOS

Introduced in January 2025 for compatible iPhones, Live Caller ID uses Apple’s iOS 18.2 or later caller-identification framework to perform real-time lookups while applying privacy-preserving techniques. The product also added automatic spam blocking for Premium users and helped bring the iOS experience closer to the real-time functionality long associated with Truecaller on Android.

Controversies

  • 2021

Indian privacy litigation and data-use allegations

Reports about a public-interest petition in the Bombay High Court alleged unauthorized use or sharing of user data and named Truecaller among the respondents. Truecaller said it had not received formal communication at the time of its statement, denied selling user data and maintained that it followed data-minimization and privacy practices.

  • 2019

iOS advertising SDK transmitted data before privacy-policy acceptance

Truecaller acknowledged that one advertising SDK in its iOS application transmitted certain device and advertising-related information before users accepted the privacy policy. The company said it investigated the matter, removed the problematic behavior and submitted a corrected version to the App Store.

  • 2019

Application security vulnerability reported by Ehraz Ahmed

A researcher identified a vulnerability that could expose user, system and location-related information through the application’s API. Truecaller confirmed the issue and implemented a fix. The episode contributed to broader scrutiny of the security risks associated with a large caller-identification database.

  • 2019

Accidental UPI registration activation in India

A Truecaller update in India unintentionally triggered an SMS-based bank-verification process for some users, causing complaints that people had been enrolled in the payments service without adequate consent. Truecaller attributed the incident to a software bug and released a corrective update. The company later stated that it discontinued UPI services in March 2021.

  • 2013

    Website cyberattack and unauthorized access

Truecaller disclosed that its website had been compromised in a July 2013 cyberattack. The company said that attackers accessed authentication tokens, which it reset, and stated that passwords and credit-card data were not stored or exposed. The incident nonetheless raised concerns about the security of a service built around a large telephone-number database.

  • Privacy controversy surrounding contact-data collection

Truecaller has faced continuing public and legal criticism over the way its directory may contain information about people who have not directly registered for the service. The controversy concerns contact synchronization, number identification, the rights of non-users and the allocation of controller and processor responsibilities under data-protection law.

  • Nigerian litigation concerning non-user data

Nigerian proceedings have examined whether Truecaller’s collection, storage and processing of information about non-users interferes with privacy rights under Nigerian data-protection rules. Truecaller has argued in litigation that users whose address books are involved may be the data controllers and that Truecaller can act as a processor, while the legal characterization has remained a matter of dispute.
