Overview
True Corporation is a Thailand-based communications conglomerate whose businesses span mobile telecommunications, fixed broadband, pay television, digital media and other technology services. The company traces its origins to TelecomAsia, which was established on 13 November 1990 and developed initially around fixed-line telecommunications. It became a publicly traded company on the Stock Exchange of Thailand in December 1993. The business expanded beyond fixed lines through a series of telecommunications and media investments. In 2001, TelecomAsia formed TA Orange with France’s Orange SA to enter mobile communications. Orange later sold its stake, although the Orange brand continued to be used in Thailand until the mobile operation was renamed True Move in 2006. TelecomAsia adopted the True Corporation name in 2004 as part of an effort to unify its telecommunications businesses under one consumer-facing identity. Related operations, including Asia Infonet, were also brought into the True brand architecture and became True Internet. True pursued a convergence strategy that combined mobile, broadband, fixed-line, television and digital content. In 2005, it increased its interest in UBC, then Thailand’s leading cable television provider. The service was subsequently rebranded UBC-True and then TrueVisions in 2007. This gave the group a major pay-TV and mass-media platform alongside its internet and telecommunications operations. The company later developed True Online for broadband and fixed connectivity, TrueMove H for mobile services, and True Digital for a wider set of digital, entertainment, gaming and device-related activities. TrueMove H launched commercial 4G LTE services on the 2100 MHz band in May 2013, becoming the first Thai mobile operator to provide commercial service using that technology according to the referenced account. The company continued investing in network expansion; in 2014 it announced a 10 billion baht program intended to extend 4G LTE coverage to 80 percent of Thailand’s population. China Mobile also agreed in 2014 to acquire an 18 percent stake in True Corporation, providing a significant strategic investment during the group’s network and digital expansion period. A defining corporate turning point came in 2021, when Charoen Pokphand and Telenor announced plans to explore an approximately US$8.6 billion combination of True Corporation and Total Access Communication, commonly known as DTAC. The proposed transaction sought to combine Thailand’s second- and third-largest mobile operators by subscriber base. The transaction required regulatory review and was acknowledged by Thailand’s National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission in October 2022. The merged company retained the True Corporation name, was established on 1 March 2023, and began trading under the TRUE ticker on the Stock Exchange of Thailand on 3 March 2023. Following the merger, True’s portfolio includes the TrueMove H and DTAC TriNet mobile networks, TrueOnline broadband and fixed-line operations, TrueVisions pay television and media services, and True Digital businesses covering television, internet, online games and mobile-related services. The company operates fixed-line, wireless, cable television, IPTV and broadband services in Thailand. Its positioning is based on converged connectivity and the ability to combine communications infrastructure with entertainment and digital platforms. The company is therefore both a network operator and a consumer technology and media group, rather than a mobile-only brand.
History
True Corporation developed from TelecomAsia, a Thai telecommunications company established on 13 November 1990. Its early business was associated with fixed-line communications, and the company entered the public market on the Stock Exchange of Thailand on 22 December 1993. TelecomAsia also had a partnership with Verizon during its formative period. The company expanded into mobile communications in 2001 by establishing TA Orange with Orange SA. Orange later disposed of its interest, but the Orange name remained in use in Thailand until 2006, when the mobile operation became True Move. In 2004, TelecomAsia changed its corporate name to True Corporation to consolidate its telecommunications activities around a single brand. Its internet subsidiary Asia Infonet was renamed True Internet, reinforcing the group’s move toward an integrated consumer platform. True’s convergence strategy broadened substantially through its investment in television and media. In 2005, the company increased its stake in UBC, then Thailand’s largest cable television provider. The business was renamed UBC-True and, on 24 January 2007, became TrueVisions. The pay-TV operation complemented the group’s fixed-line and internet businesses and helped establish True as a communications and entertainment conglomerate rather than a conventional network operator. Network modernization became another major focus. TrueMove H launched commercial 4G LTE service on the 2100 MHz spectrum band on 8 May 2013. In 2014, the company announced a 10 billion baht expansion program designed to increase the reach of its 4G network to 80 percent of Thailand’s population. During the same period, China Mobile agreed to purchase an 18 percent stake in True Corporation for a reported US$881 million. True also maintained a relationship with Vodafone Group through TrueMove. The group’s businesses were organized around several principal platforms. TrueMove H and DTAC TriNet represented mobile communications; TrueOnline covered broadband and fixed-line connectivity; TrueVisions operated pay television and related mass-media services; and True Digital covered television, internet, online games and mobile-related digital products. True also operated fixed-line services as a concessionaire of Thailand’s national telecommunications organization, formerly known as TOT and later associated with NT. The next major phase began in November 2021, when Charoen Pokphand and Telenor announced that they would explore combining True Corporation with Total Access Communication, the company associated with the DTAC brand. The proposed transaction was valued in the referenced material at approximately US$8.6 billion and was intended to unite Thailand’s second- and third-largest mobile operators by subscribers. The transaction was subject to regulatory review. Thailand’s National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission acknowledged the combination at a meeting on 20 October 2022. The new company retained the True Corporation name. It was founded in its merged form on 1 March 2023 and listed on the Stock Exchange of Thailand under the TRUE ticker on 3 March 2023. The post-merger organization combines the True and DTAC mobile businesses with True’s broadband, television and digital operations. Its current strategic identity is consequently centered on nationwide connectivity, converged communications, entertainment and digital services. True has also faced public controversy relating to privacy and state surveillance. Following Thailand’s 2014 coup, activists alleged that the company shared internet-account information concerning dissidents with the military-backed authorities. The available reference does not establish that the alleged sharing occurred. It does indicate that Thai governments had pursued legal and technical mechanisms for online monitoring and that True’s privacy policy allowed disclosure of user information to law-enforcement bodies. This issue remains part of the company’s public record but should be distinguished from a substantiated finding of misconduct.
