Overview

Trucks and Bus Company (TBCO), also known as the Libyan Trucks and Bus Co. (Arabic: شاحنات وشركة الحافلات), is an industrial joint venture created in 1976 by the Italian heavy-vehicle manufacturer Iveco and the Libyan State, acting through the Secretariat of Industry and Mineral Resources. Its headquarters are located in Tajura, with a second production plant opened in the capital, Tripoli. The company was established to serve the strong local demand for Iveco-range commercial vehicles. The business began as a simple assistance and maintenance centre and quickly evolved into an assembly plant and then a full production operation. Over the decades it has assembled and produced a range of Iveco trucks and buses, including the Iveco Daily, Eurocargo, Stralis and Trakker, alongside earlier models such as the Iveco 145.17 and Iveco 190 Turbo. TBCO also developed its own bus and light-commercial range under the T&BC name, including the City Bus 160, Inter City Bus 160, Midi Bus 59/12, Mini Bus 40/12, Pick Up 52-12 and Range Pick Up 35-12. Following the fall of Muammar Gaddafi and the outbreak of civil war in Libya, the company temporarily suspended its activities at the end of 2011. It subsequently had to defend itself against corruption accusations made by the newly appointed transitional government and underwent an administrative closure, before resuming activity in March 2012. TBCO remains a notable example of Libyan-Italian industrial cooperation in the automotive sector.
