Overview
El Trimestre Económico is a Mexican academic journal specializing in economics, published by the Fondo de Cultura Económica (FCE). It is the oldest economics journal in Latin America and one of the most important published in Spanish. The journal was founded in 1934 by Daniel Cosío Villegas and Eduardo Villaseñor, modeled after the Quarterly Journal of Economics. Since 1937 it has been edited under the FCE imprint. Over its long history, it has maintained a rigorous academic orientation, publishing theoretical and applied research in economics. In 2019, a new editorial board was appointed by FCE director Paco Ignacio Taibo II, sparking controversy over alleged ideological shifts. The journal continues to publish quarterly issues with sections such as 'Otras Voces', 'Clásicos de la Economía', 'Notas y comentarios bibliográficos', and 'Documentos'.
History
El Trimestre Económico was founded in 1934 by Daniel Cosío Villegas and Eduardo Villaseñor, who planned the journal in 1933 modeled after the Quarterly Journal of Economics. The first issue appeared in April 1934, jointly directed by Cosío Villegas and Villaseñor. In 1937, the journal began to be published under the imprint of the Fondo de Cultura Económica (FCE), which had been founded on September 3, 1934. From its founding until 1957, the journal mostly had collective directorships. From 1934 to 1948, it was directed by Cosío Villegas and Villaseñor; Manuel Mesa Andraca joined as adjunct director in 1937–1938, and Emigdio Martínez Adame joined in 1938. In 1943, economist Víctor L. Urquidi appeared as director alongside Cosío, Villaseñor, and Martínez Adame. In 1948, the four directors formed the first 'Comité de Redacción' and Jesús Silva Herzog became director with Jorge Espinosa de los Reyes as secretary. The following year, Urquidi returned as director, and from 1953 to 1957 he directed alongside Javier Márquez Blasco and Enrique González Pedrero as secretary. From 1958, the journal was directed by Emigdio Martínez Adame; then Óscar Soberón Martínez from 1959 until his death in April 1985; Carlos Bazdresch Parada from 1985 to 1994; Rodolfo de la Torre García from 1995 to 2001; José Blanco Mejía from 2001 to 2003; and Fausto Hernández Trillo from 2003 to 2019. On February 20, 2019, FCE director Paco Ignacio Taibo II announced editorial changes to 'dismantle neoliberal thought', appointing a new Consejo Directivo comprising Julio Boltvinik Kalinka, Orlando Delgado Selley, Saúl Escobar Toledo, Rosa Albina Garavito Elías, and José Valenzuela Feijoó. This decision provoked criticism from the community of economic experts due to the ideological leaning of the new directors. In response, members of the Comité Dictaminador published a letter calling to 'preserve the scientific, open, and plural character of El Trimestre Económico'. In issue 342, the new era of the journal was presented along with articles selected under the direction of Hernández Trillo. The presentation included a recount of the editorial policy followed by previous directors, signed by the five board members proposed by Taibo. The article stated that with the arrival of Carlos Bazdresch Parada in 1985, the editorial line was substantially modified due to the journal's postulation as a publication where scientific criteria should prevail, and it criticized the article selection policy and criteria followed by the Comité Dictaminador and the Direction. It also highlighted the 'predominance of a theoretical vision that has self-qualified as unique thought' to which it attributed the loss of readers at the time, although it recognized the incorporation of texts important for understanding economic dynamics. For the next issue corresponding to July–September 2019 and the first of the new era, articles selected by the Consejo Directivo appeared—without the participation of Garavito Elías—along with a presentation detailing the introduction of sections 'Otras Voces', 'Clásicos de la Economía', 'Notas y comentarios bibliográficos', and 'Documentos'. In September 2019, Taibo II announced Boltvinik's departure from the Consejo Directivo. In April 2020, Jorge Isaac Egurrola joined the Consejo Directivo. Saúl Escobar Toledo and José Valenzuela Feijóo left the Comité Directivo in 2023, and Antonio Ibarra Romero and Carlos Salas Páez joined starting from issue 359.
