Overview
Trillium GmbH Medizinischer Fachverlag is a German medical specialist publisher based in Grafrath, Bavaria. Founded in 1995 by Prof. Dr. med. Georg Hoffmann as a consulting firm for hospitals and the diagnostics industry, the company grew into a three-pillar business combining consulting, medical software development and specialist publishing. Today it is best known for its German-language journals Trillium Diagnostik (TD) and Trillium Krebsmedizin (TK) and its English-language journals Trillium Extracellular Vesicles (TEV) and Trillium Pathology (TP). The publisher positions itself around high-quality specialist journalism and practice-oriented continuing medical education. Its editorial content is supported by a distinguished scientific advisory board and close cooperation with professional associations and specialist conferences, and is complemented by regularly updated market overviews that objectively compare industry offerings. A CME continuing-education programme certified by the Bavarian State Medical Association (Bayerische Landesärztekammer, BLÄK) rounds out the portfolio. Beyond journals, Trillium operates the Trillium Akademie, which organises symposia and workshops on forward-looking topics in laboratory medicine and oncology, including live webinars on the safe use of AI in healthcare and medical laboratories, e-learning courses on digitalisation in laboratory medicine, and major congresses such as the Oncology Symposium and the IVD Symposium held in Munich. The company also runs a job board, an event calendar and a range of internet services in medical diagnostics, oncology and immunology, plus free software products. As the only German-language provider, it publishes online test and system overviews covering the entire field of in-vitro diagnostics, offering objective side-by-side comparisons of relevant suppliers' products. Ownership has remained in the founder's family. In 2011 Martin Hoffmann, the founder's son, became a shareholder and managing director as part of a long-planned succession; since 2022 he has been the sole shareholder of Trillium GmbH Med. Fachverlag, while Prof. Hoffmann continues to be active as a medical publisher. The company remains a privately held GmbH and is active primarily in the German-speaking market, with its English-language journals reaching an international readership.
History
Trillium GmbH was founded in 1995 by Prof. Dr. med. Georg Hoffmann of Grafrath as a consulting company for hospitals and the diagnostics industry. Between 1996 and 1998, two further offerings were added: the development of medical software and the publication of a laboratory-medicine journal. This established the "Trillium" of three complementary business areas, in line with the founder's intention. In 2011, as part of a long-planned succession arrangement, the founder's son, Dipl.-Kfm. Martin Hoffmann, was appointed as a shareholder and managing director. Since 2022, Martin Hoffmann has been the sole shareholder of Trillium GmbH Med. Fachverlag, while Prof. Hoffmann continues to be active as a medical publisher. Over the years the publishing arm expanded from its German-language laboratory-medicine journal into a portfolio that today includes Trillium Diagnostik (TD) and Trillium Krebsmedizin (TK) in German, and Trillium Pathology (TP) and Trillium Extracellular Vesicles (TEV) in English. The company also developed the Trillium Akademie, offering symposia and workshops on forward-looking topics in oncology and laboratory medicine, and became the only German-language provider of online test and system overviews covering the entire field of in-vitro diagnostics. Its CME continuing-education programme is certified by the Bavarian State Medical Association (BLÄK).
