Overview
The Tribulaunhütte (Italian: Rifugio Cesare Calciati al Tribulaun) is a mountain hut owned and operated by the Sterzing section of the Club Alpino Italiano (CAI). It sits at 2,369 metres above sea level in the Stubai Alps of South Tyrol, northern Italy, on the western side of the Pflerscher Tribulaun and just above the Pflerschtal valley. The hut is a traditional base for hikers and climbers, offering food, accommodation and a family atmosphere under the management of Daniela Eisendle and Fabrizio Ballerini. It is the starting point for the Pflerscher Höhenweg and for ascents of peaks such as the Hoher Zahn, Weißwandspitze and Pflerscher Tribulaun. The building was first erected in 1892 by the Magdeburg section of the German and Austrian Alpine Club (DuOeAV) and has since passed through several hands, including a period of Italian state expropriation after World War I and a transfer to the CAI Sterzing section in 1949. A three-storey extension was inaugurated in 1961. Today the hut remains a popular destination in a relatively undeveloped part of the Alps, offering views towards the Dolomites.
History
The Tribulaunhütte was built by the Magdeburg section of the German and Austrian Alpine Club (DuOeAV) and inaugurated on 5 August 1892. It was designed as a small refuge for climbers attempting the Pflerscher Tribulaun (3,096 m), which had seen few ascents before the hut was built. The original structure measured only 6.35 by 4.55 metres, with a main room of 4.52 by 4.15 metres containing seven beds, plus a side room with two bunk beds and an entrance that was always open as an emergency shelter. In 1894 the section established the connecting path over the Hoher Zahn and the Weisswandspitze to the Magdeburger Hütte, now known as the Kleiner Höhenweg. Because the initially unattended hut suffered considerable damage from careless walkers, the section was forced to employ a hut warden during the summer months from 1907. After World War I, the section was expropriated without compensation by the Italian state, and the hut was later handed over to the Cremona section of the Club Alpino Italiano (CAI). In 1949 both the Magdeburger Hütte and the Tribulaunhütte were transferred to the Sterzing section of the CAI. Planning for an extension began in 1953, and the three-storey extension was inaugurated in 1961. In 1964, following the South Tyrol bombings, the hut was occupied by the military and was not returned to the section until 1972. Today the hut is managed by Daniela Eisendle and Fabrizio Ballerini and continues to serve hikers and climbers in the Stubai Alps.
