Overview

The Tree Nursery of Chimbote (Vivero Forestal de Chimbote) is a natural recreational center and forest nursery located at kilometer 438 of the Panamericana Norte in Chimbote, Santa Province, Ancash Department, Peru. It was created in 1945 by the former Corporación Peruana del Santa through an agreement between Peru and the United States government's Inter-American Cooperative Health Service. The site covers a total area of 402,256 square meters, equivalent to roughly 40 hectares, and is currently administered by the Diócesis de Chimbote (Diocese of Chimbote). The Vivero Forestal is a natural enclosure with a wide variety of flora and fauna. With more than 800 tree species and extensive vegetation across its 40 hectares, it is considered the only 'green lung of Chimbote' and is reforested every year. Its fauna is varied and cared for and preserved by the administration. It is home to 39 turtles, a penguin, 4 monkeys, 1 collared peccary from the jungle, and 1 little tiger cat; it is also a temporary home for a great variety of migratory birds. In addition to its large expanse of flora and fauna, the Vivero Forestal has recreational spaces and various activities enjoyed by families from Chimbote and neighboring cities, such as a natural lagoon, forest adventure, Olympic swimming pool, rowboats and pedal boats, quad bike rides, and a paintball area. One of the attractions of the Vivero is the structure of the old Chimbote Railway; this locomotive dates from the 1970s and is the only physical evidence of the existence of a railway system in Chimbote. Historically, the Vivero Forestal was built in 1945 by the Ex-Corporación Peruana del Santa. In 1965 the Olympic swimming pool, a tourist restaurant, the forest train, and recreational games were built. In 1976 it was transferred to the company SIDERPERU through Supreme Resolution No. 065VC-4400. Later, when SIDERPERU was privatized, the Vivero Forestal was ceded to the Diócesis de Chimbote according to the SIDERPERU board agreement of March 21, 1996. It remains under the administration of the aforementioned bishopric. In 1992 it was declared Ecological Heritage of Chimbote through extraordinary session of Council Agreement No. 078-92-MPS of September 17 of that year.
