Overview
Trebjesa Brewery, also known as Pivara Trebjesa, is a brewery based in Nikšić, Montenegro, and one of the country’s most prominent beer producers. Its best-known brand is Nikšićko, a pale lager whose name is associated with the city in which the brewery operates. The brewery’s commercial history is part of the longer development of brewing in Nikšić, where beer production began in the late nineteenth century. The immediate predecessor to the modern Trebjesa operation was the Onogošt brewery, established in 1896 by Vuko Krivokapić with support from Prince Nicholas of Montenegro. A separate group of Nikšić entrepreneurs established Trebjesa in 1908, and its first beer was released in 1911. The facility experienced severe disruption during both world wars. It was burned during the First World War and used as a prison by occupying Austro-Hungarian forces. Following the war, reconstruction took time, and production resumed in 1931. The Second World War again damaged the brewery. After the liberation of Montenegro, the brewery was nationalized and underwent extensive reconstruction and expansion between 1946 and 1956. The rebuilt brewery became an important industrial institution and developed into one of Montenegro’s most recognizable consumer brands. Its market position was strengthened by the familiarity of Nikšićko among consumers in Montenegro and neighboring parts of the former Yugoslavia. The regional instability and economic disruption associated with the Yugoslav wars affected the business during the 1990s, but the brewery recovered as regional markets stabilized. Ownership changed significantly after the transition to private enterprise. Interbrew acquired a majority stake in 1997 for DM25 million. In 2009, CVC Capital Partners acquired Anheuser-Busch InBev’s Central European operations, including the business that became part of StarBev. Molson Coors acquired StarBev in 2012, bringing Trebjesa into its international brewing group. Under private ownership, the Nikšić facility also expanded beyond its traditional local portfolio through bottling and related handling of international beer brands. Trebjesa produces a compact range of lagers under the Nik name, including Nikšićko Pivo, Nik Gold, Nik Cool and Nikšićko Tamno. The brewery has also bottled brands such as Beck’s, Jelen and Staropramen for the Montenegrin market. Nikšićko and related variants have been distributed not only in Montenegro and Serbia but also in Croatia, Slovenia, Albania and Bosnia and Herzegovina, with smaller export volumes reported for Western Europe and Canada. The brewery therefore combines a strongly national identity with a regional distribution footprint. It remains an active Molson Coors operation headquartered in Nikšić.
History
Brewing in Nikšić predates the establishment of Trebjesa Brewery itself. In 1896, Vuko Krivokapić founded the Onogošt brewery, an initiative supported by Prince Nicholas in the newly established Principality of Montenegro. This early enterprise established Nikšić as a brewing center and created the industrial and local-market context in which Trebjesa later developed. In 1908, several Nikšić entrepreneurs established a separate brewery named Trebjesa. Its first beer was released in 1911. The enterprise soon encountered the political and military upheavals that affected Montenegro and the wider Balkans. During the First World War, the facility was burned and was subsequently converted into a prison by occupying Austro-Hungarian authorities. Reconstruction proceeded slowly, and brewing resumed in 1931. The Second World War caused another period of destruction and interruption. After the Axis powers were expelled, the brewery was nationalized. From 1946 through 1956 it was reconstructed and expanded, creating the industrial foundation for the postwar business. The renewed brewery became one of the most recognizable beer producers in Montenegro, with its products increasingly associated with Nikšić and with the country’s emerging consumer identity. The breakup of Yugoslavia and the conflicts of the 1990s disrupted trade, production and consumer markets. Trebjesa nevertheless recovered relatively quickly after regional conditions improved. Its established reputation, the popularity of its beers and its recognition across former Yugoslav markets supported the recovery. The company entered a new ownership phase in 1997, when Interbrew acquired a majority stake. In 2009, the Central European brewing assets of Anheuser-Busch InBev were sold to CVC Capital Partners and organized as StarBev. Molson Coors purchased StarBev in 2012, making Trebjesa part of a multinational brewing group. During the years of private ownership, the Nikšić operation broadened its activities to include bottling and handling selected international brands in addition to its domestic Nik portfolio. Trebjesa’s principal brand family is Nik, led by Nikšićko Pivo and complemented by Nik Gold, Nik Cool and Nikšićko Tamno. The brewery’s products are especially important in Montenegro and are also sold in Serbia and other neighboring countries. Nikšićko and related beers have had reported popularity in Croatia, Slovenia, Albania and Bosnia and Herzegovina, while smaller quantities have reached markets including France, Germany, Switzerland, Canada and the United Kingdom. The brewery remains based in Nikšić and operates as part of Molson Coors.
