Overview
Transtec was a German information-technology and hardware company headquartered in Reutlingen. It was founded in 1980 by Bernhard Bruscha in Tübingen, initially supplying the computer market of Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC). Seven years later the company began building up its own manufacturing. In 1991 it changed its legal form from a GmbH to an Aktiengesellschaft (stock corporation). Four years later it entered the internet, making its complete product range viewable and purchasable online. In 1998 the transtec AG went public, with its shares listed on the Neuer Markt, and in the same year it entered the telecommunications market. Transtec offered hardware systems including configurable PCs, workstations, servers and storage systems, as well as various storage systems in the RAID and Network Attached Storage (NAS) areas, high-performance computing systems and IT services. In 2000 transtec founded tec2b AG, which was sold three years later. Also in 2003 the Competence Center Cluster/Storage was established. From February 2004 the stock was listed on the Börse Stuttgart. In 2004 the company took over Triplestor GmbH, and in 2006 it bought the specialist retail brand Lynx. In December 2014 transtec AG moved to the Technologiepark Tübingen-Reutlingen; until then it had been based in Tübingen's Waldhörnlestraße for over 30 years. According to its own figures, the Aktiengesellschaft generated revenue of 44.5 million euros in 2015 with 103 employees (headcount at year-end). In April 2017 an ad-hoc announcement to the market communicated the intention to file for protective umbrella proceedings under § 270b InsO due to impending insolvency. The associated restructuring attempt was declared failed. On 27 July 2017 the board/CEO of transtec AG, Mario Kuhn, announced in a circular email that business operations would be discontinued. Transtec Computer AG in Switzerland was taken over by an investor as the only subsidiary and was able to continue its business activities.
