Overview
Transport Our Way (Hebrew: תחבורה בדרך שלנו; English: Public Transport Users Association in Israel, PTUA in Israel) is an Israeli non-profit, non-governmental organization that represents public transport users and campaigns to improve public transportation services and information infrastructure across Israel. Founded as a volunteer initiative in March 2011 and registered as an association (amuta) on 21 December 2011, it grew out of activists from the public transport forum on the Tapuz portal, in the wake of public transport reform in the Gush Dan region. The organization is apolitical and operates as a voluntary association with no political affiliations. The association's mission is to encourage the state and local authorities to enhance the role of public transportation and reduce reliance on private vehicles. It conducts research on the existing public transport system, develops suggestions for future development, and specializes in resolving bureaucratic problems for individuals or community groups by using the media, social networks, and lobbying at the Knesset (Israeli Parliament). Its vision is to enable a wide range of mobility options for road users in Israel and to make Israel a global leader in transportation. Transport Our Way has been active on numerous fronts: promoting regular public transport on Independence Day from many locations; including the periphery (Galilee, Negev, and Judea and Samaria) in the tariff plan; securing refunds for students following VAT changes; improving frequency and accessibility of public transport nationwide; enabling advance seat reservations on high-occupancy lines in the Galilee; preserving public transport in adapted formats during the COVID-19 crisis for essential workers; and advancing policy for the decentralization of transport authority to regional, spatial, and metropolitan authorities. The organization publishes position papers, conducts surveys, and engages with decision-makers in local authorities and government bodies. As of 2022, the association had about 40 volunteers. It is a member of "Life and Environment" (חיים וסביבה), the umbrella organization of environmental organizations in Israel. The board of directors includes experts in various fields, local activists, high-tech professionals, academics, and young community leaders. The organization maintains a staff and local representatives across different regions of Israel, including the Western Galilee, the Valleys, and the Sharon area. It operates through various channels, including its website, Facebook, X (Twitter), Telegram, Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube.
History
Transport Our Way (Hebrew: תחבורה בדרך שלנו; English: Public Transport Users Association in Israel, PTUA in Israel) was founded as a volunteer initiative in March 2011 by Daniel Komisar, Itai Haim, and Ilya Kogan, emerging from activists of the public transport forum on the Tapuz portal following the public transport reform in the Gush Dan region. On 21 December 2011, it was registered as an association (amuta), formalizing its status as a non-profit organization. The association's first CEO was Itai Haim, who served voluntarily from March 2012 to January 2020. Daniel Komisar served as deputy CEO from 2012 to 2019. Max Morogovsky has been the active chairman of the board since August 2020, after serving as CEO from January to August 2020 and as a board member from June 2018. From 2013 to 2016, the organization operated the "Sardine Project" to report overcrowding on bus lines, aiming to bring field data to the Ministry of Transport to improve frequency on selected routes. In 2016, the association conducted comprehensive research and built a database for KKL-JNF (Jewish National Fund) regarding accessibility to its sites via public transport. In June 2022, it published a comprehensive study on the decentralization of transport authority to regional and local levels through the establishment of regional and metropolitan transport authorities in Israel.
