Overview
Transcend Vivoscope (Beijing Transcend Vivoscope Biotechnology Co., Ltd.; Chinese: 北京超维景生物科技有限公司) is a Chinese high-tech enterprise focused on the research, development, production and sale of high-end biomedical imaging equipment. Founded in 2016 and headquartered in Haidian District, Beijing, the company grew out of a multidisciplinary biomedical imaging team at Peking University. Its core achievement is the miniaturized two-photon microscope — a device light enough (probe weight around 2.2 g) for a mouse to carry while moving freely — which for the first time internationally captured dynamic images of cortical neurons and synapses in freely behaving mice. The company commercialized this technology into the SUPERNOVA family of brain-science microscopy systems (SUPERNOVA-100, SUPERNOVA-600, SUPERNOVA-3000) and the SUPERVISION780 in-vivo two-photon microscopy system for medical endomicroscopy. It also provides application services and drug-development support, including ultrasound super-resolution imaging. Transcend Vivoscope has solved domestic bottlenecks in key components such as probes, specialty optical fibers, femtosecond lasers and miniaturized objective lenses, enabling independent production of its microscopy systems. Its technology has been recognized with the 2017 China Top Ten Scientific Advances award and selection as Nature Methods 2018 Method of the Year. The company holds numerous patents and honors, including National High-Tech Enterprise status, Beijing 'Specialized, Refined, Distinctive and Innovative' SME designation, and national-level 'Little Giant' enterprise recognition. In 2023, its in-vivo two-photon microscopy system received Class II innovative medical device approval in China — the first medical device in the country based on two-photon microscopy. Transcend Vivoscope collaborates with more than 50 partners including Peking University, Fudan University, New York University and the Max Planck Institute, and operates from Beijing and Nanjing.
History
Transcend Vivoscope was founded in 2016 in Beijing, emerging from a multidisciplinary biomedical imaging team at Peking University that spanned biology, medicine, physics and physiology. The company completed a seed financing round in its founding year. In 2017, the team successfully developed a miniaturized two-photon microscope with a probe weighing only 2.2 g, achieving the first international capture of dynamic images of cortical neurons and synapses in freely behaving mice. This technology was recognized among China's Top Ten Scientific Advances of 2017 and was named Nature Methods 2018 Method of the Year. In 2018, Transcend Vivoscope Nanjing was established, production of the miniaturized two-photon microscopy system began, sales of key components started, and the company completed a Series A financing round. By 2019, the miniaturized two-photon microscopy system entered the market, and the company was recognized as a National High-Tech Enterprise. In 2020, it launched research on an endoscopic two-photon microscope project, completed a Series A+ financing round, and developed the second-generation miniaturized two-photon microscopy system. The second-generation system reached the market in 2021, alongside the initiation of an ultrasound super-resolution blood-flow microscopy device project and clinical application research collaborations with Peking Union Medical College Hospital, China-Japan Friendship Hospital and Peking University-affiliated hospitals. In 2022, the company was shortlisted in the Top 10 of the biomedical track of the 2022 Zhongguancun International Frontier Science and Technology Innovation Competition, and was designated a Beijing IPR Demonstration Unit. In 2023, it developed a miniaturized three-photon microscope weighing only 2.17 g, breaking previous imaging-depth limits for miniaturized multiphoton microscopy and achieving, for the first time, functional imaging of the entire cerebral cortex and hippocampal neurons in freely behaving mice. That same year, its self-developed in-vivo two-photon microscopy system received Class II innovative medical device approval in China — the first medical device in the country based on two-photon microscopy. In 2024, the company was recognized as a national-level 'Little Giant' enterprise (specialized, refined, distinctive and innovative). By 2025–2026, it continued to advance miniaturized microscopy technology, including a 1 g compound metalens miniaturized two-photon microscope, and was selected for the 2025 Deloitte China Healthcare Rising Star list and a national key 'Little Giant' enterprise high-quality development support program.
