Overview

TPG is a United States-based global alternative asset management firm. The business was established in 1992 as Texas Pacific Group by David Bonderman, James Coulter and William S. Price III, who brought experience from leveraged buyouts and corporate investing. It later used the names TPG Capital and TPG Growth before adopting TPG as the principal brand across its investment platforms. The firm manages capital on behalf of institutional investors and other eligible investors through private equity funds, growth equity vehicles, credit strategies, real-estate funds, public-equity investments, venture-oriented strategies and impact or climate funds. Its investment activity has covered consumer and retail, technology, telecommunications and media, industrials, healthcare, travel and leisure, financial services, education, energy and infrastructure. Rather than operating primarily as a consumer-facing product brand, TPG is a financial-services and investment-management brand whose offerings are funds, strategies and portfolio-company investments. TPG’s early development was marked by large corporate buyouts and cross-border investing. Its 1993 acquisition of Continental Airlines helped establish the firm, while the creation of Newbridge Capital with Blum Capital and ACON Investments expanded its emerging-markets presence. During the 1990s, TPG invested in businesses including AT&T Paradyne, Beringer Wine, Ducati, J. Crew, Del Monte Foods and Oxford Health Plans. The firm subsequently participated in transactions involving Petco, Gemplus, Seagate Technology, Burger King, MGM, SunGard, Midwest Airlines and other companies. The 2000s also demonstrated the risks of leveraged and complex private-equity transactions. TPG’s investment in Washington Mutual during the 2008 financial crisis was substantially impaired after the bank was placed into government receivership. Its involvement in WIND Hellas and other investments generated public scrutiny concerning capital structures, investor exits and financial outcomes. These episodes formed part of the broader debate about private-equity governance and leverage rather than changing TPG’s basic identity as an alternative investment manager. From the 2010s onward, TPG broadened its platform beyond traditional buyouts. TPG Growth targeted growth-stage and smaller companies; the firm developed dedicated real-estate and credit activities; and in 2016 it partnered with Bono and Jeff Skoll to launch The Rise Fund, an impact-investing platform. TPG Rise Climate followed in 2021 with a strategy focused on commercially viable climate technologies. The company also expanded through investments and acquisitions involving healthcare, education, software, hospitality, media, consumer brands and communications businesses. TPG became a publicly traded company on Nasdaq in January 2022. Its public-company structure exists alongside private funds and affiliated investment platforms. In 2023, TPG agreed to acquire Angelo Gordon, strengthening its credit and alternative-investment capabilities, and it joined Francisco Partners in the acquisition of New Relic. TPG also retained a major role in DirecTV after AT&T separated the business, ultimately acquiring AT&T’s remaining interest in 2025. The firm continues to operate as a diversified alternative asset manager with offices and investments across multiple regions and industries.

History

TPG began in 1992 when David Bonderman, James Coulter and William S. Price III formed Texas Pacific Group. The founders had experience in leveraged acquisitions, including work associated with investor Robert Bass. In 1993, the new firm and its partners completed the buyout of Continental Airlines, an early transaction that helped define its corporate-buyout model. In 1994, TPG joined Blum Capital and ACON Investments to create Newbridge Capital, a platform for emerging-market investments, especially in Asia and later Latin America. TPG continued building a diversified portfolio during the mid-1990s through investments in AT&T Paradyne, Beringer Wine and Ducati. In 1997 it raised more than $2.5 billion for its second private-equity fund and acquired interests in J. Crew and Del Monte Foods. Although the J. Crew investment initially struggled because of its purchase valuation, the company later recovered and completed a public offering. The firm expanded into healthcare, technology, communications and industrial businesses during the late 1990s and early 2000s. Its investments included Oxford Health Plans, Piaggio, Bally International, ON Semiconductor, Petco, Gemplus, Seagate Technology, Telenor Media and MEMC Electronic Materials. TPG also participated in the acquisition of Burger King, which later underwent a brand and operating turnaround before returning to the public markets. Between 2004 and 2008, TPG took part in several large consortium transactions. It joined Sony and other investors in the buyout of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and participated in the acquisition of SunGard, then one of the largest technology leveraged buyouts. It also pursued Portland General Electric, although regulators rejected the proposed transaction. In 2007, the firm rebranded its funds and platforms under the TPG name. The global financial crisis exposed the downside of large leveraged investments. TPG led a major capital investment in Washington Mutual in 2008, but the bank was subsequently seized by United States authorities, causing a substantial loss on TPG’s investment. Other transactions, including the firm’s involvement with WIND Hellas, prompted public discussion about leverage, investor protections and the treatment of preferred or subordinated securities. During the 2010s, TPG expanded its business architecture. It acquired and invested in companies in insurance software, media, education, hospitality, healthcare, restaurants, technology staffing and clinical research. TPG Growth became an important growth-equity and smaller-buyout platform. Dedicated real-estate fundraising also became part of the firm’s strategy. In 2016, TPG launched The Rise Fund with Bono and Jeff Skoll, making impact investing a visible component of the group. In 2021 it introduced TPG Rise Climate, a climate-focused strategy that later reached a reported $7.3 billion final close. TPG’s recent history has combined platform expansion with a transition to public ownership. In 2021, it acquired a 30 percent interest in a newly separated DirecTV business from AT&T. TPG completed its Nasdaq IPO in January 2022. It later acquired a majority interest in Sodali & Co, agreed to purchase Angelo Gordon, and participated in the acquisition of New Relic with Francisco Partners. In 2024 and 2025, TPG remained active in Asian buyouts, DirecTV financing and communications-related transactions, including the acquisition of AT&T’s remaining DirecTV stake and Sabre’s hospitality-solutions business. The result is a multi-strategy asset manager operating through private funds, listed-company capital and affiliated investment platforms.
