Overview

Toyo Drilube Co., Ltd. (東洋ドライルーブ株式会社) is a Japanese specialty chemical company headquartered in Daisawa, Setagaya, Tokyo. It is dedicated to solid-film lubricants — dry, resin-bonded coatings containing molybdenum disulfide, fluoropolymers and similar solid lubricants that replace oil and grease while also providing corrosion protection and paint-film protection. The company operates an integrated business spanning research and development, manufacturing and contract coating application of these products, which it markets under its own DRILUBE trademark. The company was established in July 1962 in Setagaya, Tokyo, with capital of 5 million yen, as a specialist solid-film lubricant venture formed under a technical tie-up with the U.S. firm DRILUBE (now All Metals Processing of Orange County, LLC). Through that agreement Toyo Drilube acquired the exclusive sales and processing rights for DRILUBE products in the East Asian region, a foundation on which it built its domestic and later international coating network. Over the following decades Toyo Drilube expanded its Japanese footprint with a research laboratory in Sagamihara, Kanagawa (1975) and coating plants in Sagamihara (1982), Ota, Gunma (1985) and Kasugai, Aichi (1988), before consolidating its Sagamihara research and processing operations at the Aikawa high-tech industrial park in Aikawa, Kanagawa in 1989. From the 2000s it internationalized, investing in Zhongshan Sanmin Metal Processing in Guangdong, China (2002), establishing Kunshan Sanmin Coating Electronic Materials Technology in Jiangsu (2004) and Guangzhou Drilube Technology in Guangdong (2008), and founding DRILUBE (THAILAND) in Thailand's Amata Nakorn industrial estate (2010, relocated within the estate in 2012) and DRILUBE VIETNAM in Vietnam's Dong Van II industrial park (2013). Toyo Drilube listed on the JASDAQ securities exchange in February 2008. In Japan it has also grown through subsidiaries, making Nagano Drilube a subsidiary in April 2019 and having its Oita Drilube subsidiary acquire the Kyushu business office from the bankruptcy trustee of Mansho Co., Ltd. in July 2020. Today the group combines a Tokyo head office, a Kanagawa technical development center and Gunma and Aichi business divisions with domestic subsidiaries (Nagano Drilube, Oita Drilube), overseas subsidiaries in China, Thailand and Vietnam, and overseas affiliates in Zhongshan and Kunshan, China. Its DRILUBE coatings serve automotive, industrial machinery, electronics and other markets where low-friction, dry, corrosion-resistant surfaces are required.

History

Toyo Drilube Co., Ltd. was founded in July 1962 in Setagaya, Tokyo, with capital of 5 million yen, as a company specializing in solid-film lubricants. It was established under a technical tie-up with the U.S. firm DRILUBE (now All Metals Processing of Orange County, LLC), from which it obtained the exclusive sales rights for DRILUBE products in the East Asian region as well as processing rights. The name DRILUBE is Toyo Drilube's own trademark; the products are dry coatings containing solid lubricants such as molybdenum disulfide and fluoropolymers that substitute for oil and grease while combining lubricating, anti-friction, corrosion-protection and paint-film-protection functions. In April 1975 the company opened a research laboratory for DRILUBE products in Sagamihara, Kanagawa. In August 1982 it opened a factory in Sagamihara for the coating application business, followed by coating plants in Ota, Gunma in March 1985 and in Kasugai, Aichi in March 1988. In October 1989 the Sagamihara research laboratory and processing factory were relocated to the Aikawa high-tech industrial park in Aikawa, Kanagawa. The 2000s brought international expansion. In June 2002 Toyo Drilube invested in Zhongshan Sanmin Metal Processing Co., Ltd. in Zhongshan, Guangdong, China. In January 2008 it founded Guangzhou Drilube Technology Co., Ltd. in Guangzhou, Guangdong, China. In February 2008 the company listed on the JASDAQ securities exchange. Further overseas growth followed in Southeast Asia. In July 2010 DRILUBE (THAILAND) CO., LTD. was established in Thailand's Amata Nakorn industrial estate, and in May 2012 it was relocated within the same estate. In March 2013 DRILUBE VIETNAM CO., LTD. was established in Vietnam's Dong Van II industrial park. In Japan, the group continued to build out its subsidiary network. In April 2019 Nagano Drilube Co., Ltd. in Kamiina District, Nagano Prefecture, became a subsidiary. In July 2020 the subsidiary Oita Drilube Co., Ltd. acquired the Kyushu business office from the bankruptcy trustee of Mansho Co., Ltd. The company's business bases today include a Tokyo head office, a technical development center in Kanagawa, a Gunma division and an Aichi division.
