Touchstone Television

Touchstone Television was the short-lived second incarnation of a Disney-associated television production label. Unlike the original Touchstone Television, which was established in 1985 as part of Disney's Touchstone Pictures operation and later became ABC Studios, the subject of this dossier was created in December 2014 through the merger of Fox Television Studios and Fox 21. It initially operated as Fox 21 Television Studios within 21st Century Fox's television-production structure. The merged company combined two production businesses with overlapping ambitions in cable and premium television. Fox Television Studios had developed a pod-based model for smaller production units and had worked across scripted, alternative, international, and reality programming. Its credits included The Shield, Burn Notice, The Hughleys, Malcolm in the Middle, and various television films and unscripted formats. Fox 21, established in 2004, concentrated on relatively cost-conscious but distinctive scripted and reality projects. Its productions included Sons of Anarchy, Homeland, Terriers, Tyrant, The Americans, Breakout Kings, Salem, Witches of East End, and Beauty and the Geek. After the merger, the combined operation was led by Bert Salke, who had previously run Fox 21. The label became part of Disney's corporate structure after Disney acquired most of the entertainment assets of 21st Century Fox. In August 2020, Disney renamed Fox 21 Television Studios as Touchstone Television, reviving a brand that had been dormant since the earlier Touchstone television operation was renamed ABC Studios in 2007. The name change was part of a broader Walt Disney Television reorganization and did not represent a return of the original 1985 company. The renamed studio retained a typewriter-inspired visual identity associated with the Fox 21 branding. Touchstone Television had only a brief operating life under its revived name. Its reported first and only production credited under the Touchstone Television label was Books of Blood, a Hulu film based on the work of Clive Barker. On December 1, 2020, Disney announced another restructuring in which Touchstone Television would be wound into 20th Television. Salke moved to an overall producing arrangement with Disney Television Studios, while the label's remaining operations were absorbed. The company is therefore best understood as a transitional production brand created during the integration of Fox assets into Disney, rather than as a continuing standalone studio. The second Touchstone Television emerged from the restructuring of Fox's television-production businesses rather than from the original Disney Touchstone television company. One of its principal predecessors, Fox Television Studios, was formed in 1997 as a production subsidiary associated with Fox Entertainment Group. It was designed to accommodate smaller production units, or pods, working in scripted, alternative, international, and reality programming. Early affiliated operations included the Greenblatt-Janollari Studio, Fox Television Studios Productions, and Regency Television. The studio developed projects such as The Hughleys, Malcolm in the Middle, The Shield, and television films, while its alternative and international activities supported programs and formats including Talkshow with Spike Feresten, The Girls Next Door, Joe Millionaire, and Temptation Island. Fox Television Studios later concentrated increasingly on scripted programming and international co-productions. Its projects included Burn Notice for USA Network, which became one of its notable successes. The company also operated or experimented with international production structures, including Fox Television Studios International, Fox World, and a British operation that followed the acquisition and later rebranding of Scream Films. These arrangements were eventually reduced, with the scripted operation becoming the principal continuing activity. The other major predecessor, Fox 21, was established in 2004 as a lower-cost production arm intended to develop unusual, distinctive, and commercially focused programming for cable and other outlets. Its early output included Beauty and the Geek and Sons of Anarchy. Under Bert Salke, who took charge in 2010, the unit expanded its scripted slate. Among its associated series were Homeland, The Americans, Terriers, Tyrant, Breakout Kings, Salem, Witches of East End, The Chi, Chance, Brickleberry, The Bastard Executioner, and Mayans M.C. In December 2014, Fox Television Studios and Fox 21 were merged into Fox 21 Television Studios. The combination reflected the two units' increasingly similar market focus, especially their work in cable television, and followed the promotion of Fox Television Studios president David Madden to Fox Broadcasting. Bert Salke led the consolidated studio. The company continued to develop projects for a range of networks and platforms and maintained relationships with outside producers. Disney's acquisition of most of 21st Century Fox's entertainment assets brought Fox 21 Television Studios into Disney's television-studio organization. On August 10, 2020, Disney renamed the company Touchstone Television, reviving a name previously used by a different Disney television-production operation. The earlier Touchstone Television had begun in 1985 and was renamed ABC Studios in 2007; it later became part of ABC Signature. The 2020 relaunch therefore represented a corporate-label change, not a continuous legal or operational identity with the 1985 company. The revived label operated only briefly. Books of Blood, a Hulu film, was identified as its first and only production under the Touchstone Television name. On December 1, 2020, Disney announced that the label would be folded into 20th Television. Salke transitioned to an overall producing deal with Disney Television Studios, while the remaining operations were absorbed.
