Overview

Touax Modular was the modular buildings activity of TOUAX SCA, a French family-controlled group specialised in the operational leasing, sale and technical management of standardised transport and infrastructure equipment. The modular buildings business was launched in 1973, extending the group's asset-leasing model from river barges, railcars and containers into relocatable building units used for temporary offices, site accommodation, classrooms, healthcare facilities and similar applications. It operated as one of the group's four historical business lines alongside river barges, freight railcars and containers. The parent group, TOUAX, traces its origins to 1853, when a small French firm began operating river transport services on the Seine and the Oise. The company was listed on the Paris stock exchange in 1906 and was formally created under the TOUAX name in 1898. Over the following century it diversified into railcar leasing (1955), modular buildings (1973) and container leasing (1985), becoming one of the European leaders in operational leasing of sustainable transport equipment. TOUAX SCA is listed on EURONEXT Growth® Paris under the ticker ALTOU (ISIN FR0000033003) and manages over €1.2 billion of tangible assets for its own account and on behalf of investors. Within this structure, Touax Modular provided modular building solutions — prefabricated, relocatable and often leased rather than sold — to construction, education, healthcare and public-sector customers, mainly in France and other European markets. The activity reflected the group's core competence: owning standardised, revenue-generating assets and managing them over long lifecycles for customers who preferred leasing to ownership. In February 2017, TOUAX sold the Modular Buildings activity, refocusing the group on its three remaining equipment-leasing divisions: freight railcars, river barges and containers. As a result, Touax Modular no longer operates as an active business within the group. Its history remains part of the TOUAX corporate record as a former division that demonstrated the group's ability to apply its leasing model to adjacent asset classes.

History

Touax Modular was the modular buildings division of TOUAX SCA, a French group whose roots lie in nineteenth-century river transport. The parent company began in 1853 as a small French firm operating river transport services on the Seine and the Oise rivers. It was formally created under the TOUAX name in 1898 and listed on the Paris stock exchange on 7 May 1906. Over the twentieth century the group expanded from river barges into other standardised transport assets: it invested in the railcars activity in 1955, launched the modular buildings activity in 1973, and acquired the containers activity in 1985. The modular buildings business was therefore a mid-twentieth-century diversification, launched at a time when demand for temporary and relocatable buildings — for construction sites, schools, healthcare and public services — was growing in France and across Europe. It fitted the group's operating model: owning standardised, durable assets and leasing them to customers over multi-year periods, while also offering sale and related services. The division operated alongside the group's other equipment-leasing lines and benefited from TOUAX's asset-management and financing capabilities. During the 1990s and 2000s, TOUAX consolidated its international expansion and increasingly managed assets on behalf of third-party investors. In 1990 the group formalised asset management on behalf of third parties; in 1998 the group came under the joint management of Fabrice and Raphael Walewski, representing the fifth generation of the founding family; and in 2000 the group consolidated its international expansion. The modular buildings activity remained part of the portfolio through this period. In February 2017, TOUAX sold the Modular Buildings activity. The disposal was part of a strategic refocusing on the group's three core equipment-leasing divisions: freight railcars, river barges and containers. After the sale, Touax Modular ceased to be an active operating business within the group. TOUAX continued to describe itself as one of the European leaders in operational leasing of sustainable transport equipment, managing over €1.2 billion of tangible assets by 2021 and more than €1.3 billion by the time of its later corporate communications. The group remains listed on EURONEXT Growth® Paris under the ticker ALTOU (ISIN FR0000033003) and is still controlled by the Walewski family, which holds approximately 32% of the capital.
