Overview
Totenko Co., Ltd. (株式会社東天紅) is a Japanese restaurant company that operates a chain of Chinese-cuisine restaurants under the Totenko brand. The company traces its origins to December 1961, when Koizumi Ichibei, the founder of the retailer Akafudado, opened a Chinese restaurant on the shore of Shinobazu Pond in Ueno, Tokyo. The first restaurant was a large-scale venue with four floors above ground and one below, offering roughly 1,000 seats entirely devoted to Chinese cuisine. In 1966 the Ueno flagship was greatly expanded into an eight-storey building with about 3,000 seats, described by the company as one of the largest Chinese restaurants in the world at the time. Totenko's culinary policy is distinctive: its dishes are based on Cantonese and Fujian cooking but are prepared by Japanese chefs for Japanese palates. The company avoids strongly aromatic or pungent seasonings and does not make dishes with pronounced spiciness, aiming to be enjoyed by elderly guests and children across three or four generations of a family. This approach, which the company calls "Totenko cuisine," has been central to its identity since its founding. Beyond à la carte and course dining, Totenko operates private rooms and banquet halls for weddings, family celebrations, memorial services, business receptions, shareholder meetings, seminars, dinner shows and exhibitions. The company also runs an online shop selling items such as Chinese-style osechi (New Year dishes), and it has developed sub-brands including LUCIS GARDEN, a Chinese dining concept, and Cafe53, a café bar. The company has been listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange since 1978, when it became the first Chinese restaurant company to list on the Second Section. It was promoted to the First Section in 1984 and moved to the Standard Market in 2022 following the exchange's market restructuring. As of the fiscal year ended February 2026, Totenko reported annual sales of about 4.8 billion yen, operated 11 restaurants and employed 292 people. It is part of the Koizumi Group, alongside its affiliate Kaientei. A same-named Chinese restaurant in Seoul, South Korea, is unrelated to the company.
History
Totenko's history begins in the post-war period. In September 1948, a company that would later become the current legal entity was established, and in March 1957 the predecessor company, Ueno Onsen Kanko Co., Ltd., was founded. In May 1961, Ueno Onsen Kanko changed its trade name to (old) Totenko Co., Ltd., with its head office in Ikenohata, Taito Ward. In December 1961, Koizumi Ichibei, the founder of the retailer Akafudado, opened a Chinese restaurant in Ueno, marking the birth of the Totenko restaurant brand. The first restaurant had four floors above ground and one below, with about 1,000 seats, all serving Chinese cuisine, and was described as one of the world's leading Chinese restaurants in scale. In 1961, Totenko also introduced Japan's first Chinese cuisine buffet, which had a strong impact on Japanese diners at the time and was extremely popular. In October 1966, the Ueno flagship underwent a major expansion, becoming an eight-storey building with two basement levels and a total floor area of 10,300 square meters, with 3,000 seats, said to be the largest in the world. In May 1967, the company established a labor union, the first in the industry. In April 1969, it opened its first chain restaurant, the Fukagawa branch in Tokyo's Fukagawa district, the birthplace of Akafudado, starting multi-store chain development. That same year, it began selling Chinese lunch sets inspired by airline meals, changing the common perception that Chinese food meant large shared platters. In 1970, Totenko expanded to Osaka. In 1972, it took its first step toward internationalization by opening a branch in Dayton, Ohio, in the United States, which operated until 1979. In October 1977, the dormant company Totenko International Co., Ltd. changed its name to (new) Totenko Co., Ltd., with its head office in Yushima, Bunkyo Ward. On March 1, 1978, (new) Totenko absorbed (old) Totenko in a merger aimed at changing the par value of shares, and the head office was moved to the old company's location. In October 1978, Totenko became the first Chinese restaurant company to list on the Second Section of the Tokyo Stock Exchange. In November 1979, in partnership with the Swiss Mövenpick company, it opened the first Mövenpick restaurant in Shinjuku, which operated until 1997. In August 1981, the Akita Castle Hotel branch opened, aiming to be the leading restaurant in its region. In 1983, Totenko began selling Shanghai crab, directly imported from China, which was rare at the time. In August 1984, it was promoted to the First Section of the Tokyo Stock Exchange and also listed on the First Section of the Osaka Securities Exchange. In 1985, it launched its own private-brand "Totenko Shaoxing wine," ahead of the industry. In August 1987, the JACK Omiya branch opened in Saitama Prefecture. In September 1991, it opened the Himeji Sanyo Department Store Totenko branch near Himeji Castle, a World Cultural Heritage site and National Treasure. In October 1991, it established Kaientei Co., Ltd. as a subsidiary. In October 1994, it opened the Ebisu Garden Place Tower branch in Tokyo. In January 1997, it opened the Tokyo International Forum branch in Yurakucho. In May 2000, it opened the Dai-ichi Hotel Ryogoku branch in Tokyo, and in October 2000, the Yokohama Sakuragicho Washington Hotel branch in the Minato Mirai 21 district of Yokohama. In 2003, it delisted from the Osaka Securities Exchange. In April 2005, the Ueno branch renovated its first, second, fifth and sixth floors and exterior, and introduced a new wedding style called "LUCIS." In March 2006, the Akita Castle Hotel branch fully reopened following hotel renovations; in September 2006, the Tokyo International Forum branch was renovated with a focus on banquets, and the Ebisu Garden Place Tower branch fully reopened after renovation. In March 2007, the seventh-floor grill of the Ueno branch reopened as the dining venue "LUCIS GARDEN." In March 2015, the Ueno flagship was rebuilt as a foundation for the next 50 years and as a flagship for further growth. In June 2016, the KITTE Nagoya branch opened in front of Nagoya Station. In August 2017, LUCIS GARDEN Ebisu reopened on the 39th floor of the Ebisu Garden Place Tower. In April 2022, following the Tokyo Stock Exchange's market restructuring, Totenko moved from the First Section to the Standard Market. In 2000, Totenko was involved in a notable takeover bid (TOB) incident. In January 2000, an individual shareholder suddenly appeared, claiming to have acquired 2,645,000 shares, or 10.28% of outstanding shares. A man who claimed to have received the shares from this shareholder then announced the acquisition of 5,238,000 shares, or 20.36%, becoming the second-largest shareholder. In February, this second shareholder announced a takeover bid for Totenko, but withdrew it a few days later. In March, a Mexican businessman announced a TOB, but it was invalidated due to incomplete documents. These announcements and the involvement of well-known speculators caused the stock price to fluctuate wildly. In November 2000, the man and three others were arrested by the Tokyo District Public Prosecutors Office on suspicion of violating the Large Shareholding Report obligation under the Securities and Exchange Law and spreading rumors, and were indicted in December. Three of the suspects received summary fines of 500,000 yen on December 4, 2000, and one was sentenced on November 8, 2002, by the Tokyo District Court to two years in prison, suspended for four years, and a fine of 6 million yen. All judgments were finalized. The court found that the TOB was announced without any prospect of raising funds, aiming to drive up the stock price.
