Overview
Totani Corporation (トタニ技研工業株式会社, Totani Giken Kogyo Kabushiki-gaisha) is a Japanese manufacturer of bag-making machines (製袋機, seidai-ki) for plastic film packaging. Headquartered in Kyoto, the company designs and builds machinery that produces a wide range of bags and pouches used in food, household goods, beverage, and pharmaceutical packaging, including retort pouches and IV drip bags. Its product lines include three-side seal bag-making machines (BH series), BOX POUCH® machines (BH series), half-fold seal machines (CT series), center seal machines (FD series), and melt-cut seal machines (HK series). The company traces its origins to 1956, when it began manufacturing and selling bag-making machines, and was incorporated in 1961. Over more than half a century it has introduced numerous industry firsts, including Japan's first laminated-film bag-making machine, the world's first retort pouch bag-making machine, and the world's first three-servo variable seal control system with international patents. Totani also developed its proprietary BOX POUCH® machine. Its machines are used by major global companies in more than 60 countries, and the company claims top global sales among plastic film bag-making machine manufacturers. Totani operates a global sales and service network with subsidiaries including TOTANI AMERICA INC. (Wisconsin, USA), Totani Europe GmbH (Düsseldorf, Germany), Totani Asia Pacific Pte Ltd. (Singapore), and a production base, Dalian Totani Giken Kogyo Co., Ltd. (Dalian, China). It also has a Tokyo sales office. The company emphasizes environmental initiatives, such as converting main lighting to LED in 2022, and offers a remote production management system called the Totani Data Communication System, as well as online parts ordering. Totani remains a privately held company. Its management has been led by the Totani family, with Mikio Totani becoming president in the 1990s and Ryuichi Totani becoming president in the 2010s. The company continues to exhibit at major international packaging trade shows such as CHINAPLAS, Interpack, TOKYO PACK, and PACK EXPO INTERNATIONAL.
History
Totani Corporation's history begins in 1956, when the company started manufacturing and selling bag-making machines. In 1961, it was incorporated as Totani Giken Kogyo Co., Ltd. (戸谷技研工業株式会社), following its origins as a manufacturer and seller of seafood processing machinery under the name Totani Iron Works (戸谷鉄工所) in Shimogyo-ku, Kyoto. The company later moved its factory to the current Higashi Plant and adopted a five-day workweek in the 1960s, which was advanced for Japan at the time. In the decades that followed, Totani introduced a series of industry-first machines. It developed Japan's first laminated-film bag-making machine, the EW-1 impulse-seal three-side seal bag-making machine. It also developed the world's first biaxially oriented polypropylene (OPP) dedicated machine, the RS-200 hot-radiation welding automatic tube-making machine, and the world's first retort pouch bag-making machine, the H-510 three-side press heat-seal automatic bag-making machine. Other innovations include the HK-1 side-weld automatic bag-making machine (world's first OPP side-weld bag-making machine) and the LB-850 fully automatic garbage bag making and packaging machine, which won the 9th Automation Machinery Development Award from the Japan Machinery Federation. In the 1980s and 1990s, Totani invested in advanced manufacturing and IT systems, including CAD, UNIX servers, a flexible manufacturing system (FMS), and a self-developed manufacturing resource planning (MRP) system. It also introduced a value-added distribution system for bonuses, flex-time, and casual dress. The company established an internet server and website in the 1990s. International expansion accelerated: Totani exhibited at its first overseas trade show in the United States and subsequently exhibited annually abroad. In 1997, it established TOTANI AMERICA INC. in Wisconsin, USA, as a wholly owned subsidiary. In 2001, it founded Dalian Totani Giken Kogyo Co., Ltd. in Dalian, China, as a production base. In 2004, it opened a Tokyo sales office. In 2006, it established Totani Europe GmbH in Düsseldorf, Germany, and in 2007, Totani Asia Pacific Pte Ltd. in Singapore. In 2010, it opened a Shanghai office in China and built a new factory for Dalian Totani. In 2012, Ryuichi Totani became president, and the company's sales exceeded 10 billion yen in the January term. In 2014, Totani Europe GmbH moved to a new location. In 2022, Totani converted its main lighting to LED as part of energy-saving efforts. The company continues to develop and market advanced bag-making machines, including the BOX POUCH® machine, and provides remote production management through its Totani Data Communication System. It remains a privately held, family-led company headquartered in Kyoto.
