Overview
Torie Keio Chofu (トリエ京王調布) is a shopping center located in Fuda and Kojimacho, Chofu City, Tokyo, Japan. It was developed on the ground-level site of Chofu Station on the Keio Line after the railway was moved underground through the Keio Line and Sagamihara Line continuous grade-separation project completed in 2012. The center opened on September 29, 2017, and is operated by Keio SC Creation, a company in the Keio Group. The facility consists of three buildings, A, B, and C, connected by an open pedestrian space that includes rails evoking the former ground-level station. Its concept is "a slightly stylish life befitting Chofu." Building A, directly at the station, focuses on daily goods and fashion, including a large Seijo Ishii grocery store and a Keio Department Store satellite shop. Building B houses a large Bic Camera electronics store, while Building C includes the Aeon Cinema Theatus Chofu multiplex and other tenants. The name "Torie" is a coined word combining the Latin word for "three" and an Icelandic word for "tree," reflecting the wish that the three buildings take root like three large trees and grow with the community. At opening, the center had 72 tenants; as of August 2022, including three shops on the ticket-gate floor and five shops in the adjacent Chofu South Gate Building, the total reached 77 tenants. The center serves as a key commercial hub for Chofu City and the surrounding area, and its cinema restored a movie theater to a city known as a "town of movies" after the closure of the previous local cinema in 2011.
History
Torie Keio Chofu was developed as part of the redevelopment of the area around Chofu Station following the undergrounding of the Keio Line and Keio Sagamihara Line. Chofu Station is a junction where the Keio Main Line and the Sagamihara Line diverge, and for many years the railway divided the city north and south. In 2012, the "Keio Line and Sagamihara Line (around Chofu Station) Continuous Grade Separation Project" moved the tracks underground, freeing the ground-level site for commercial development. The shopping center opened on September 29, 2017, on the former station site. It was designed as three buildings—A, B, and C—with an open space between A and B/C that includes rails evoking the old ground-level station. The planning challenge was to connect Building A at the station with Building C, the farthest away. To encourage circulation along the east-west axis, the developers placed high-destination tenants in the more distant buildings: a large electronics retailer in Building B and a cinema complex in Building C. The name "Torie" is a coined word combining the Latin word for "three" and an Icelandic word for "tree," expressing the wish that the three buildings take root like three large trees and grow together with the community. At opening, the center had 72 tenants. By August 2022, including three shops on the ticket-gate floor and five shops in the adjacent Chofu South Gate Building, the total number of tenants reached 77. Building A was positioned to combine daily convenience with style, with a high proportion of sundry shops to increase visit frequency. Its first floor includes a large Seijo Ishii grocery store and a Western confectionery shop Atelier Ukai making its first appearance on the Keio Line. Floors 2 and 3 are fashion floors, the 4th floor is a lifestyle floor including a Keio Department Store satellite shop, and the 5th floor is a restaurant floor. Building B was designed to strengthen competitiveness and create bustle by attracting a large electronics retailer, Bic Camera, which had no store within a 5 km radius and was highly requested in surveys. Building C was conceived as a place to spend time rather than just shop, with tenants such as Sarutahiko Coffee's Chofu roasting hall, whose owner is from or lives in Chofu, and Cogie, inspired by cycling along the Tama River. On floors 2 to 5 of Building C is Aeon Cinema Theatus Chofu, a multiplex positioned as a landmark for "the town of movies, Chofu." Although Chofu City has a thriving film industry and promotes itself as a "town of movies," the city had no cinema since the closure of Parco Chofu Kinema in 2011. The opening of this facility restored a movie theater to the city, and the opening campaign used the catchphrase "There's a problem: there's no movie theater in the town of movies." The name "Theatus" is a coined word meaning "adding new value to a theater," and the brand has expanded with a second location, Aeon Cinema Theatus Shinsaibashi, which opened on March 16, 2021, in Shinsaibashi Parco in Osaka. The design of the buildings uses earth tones for a sense of unity, and "rail units" made from reused rails, incorporating greenery, signage, and lighting, are placed continuously at street level to create a walkable and enjoyable townscape. The project also considered reducing initial and running costs, with simple exteriors using insulated sandwich panels and a simplified multi-story parking structure.
