Overview
Topkapı Müzik is a Turkish record label founded in 1987 and headquartered in Unkapanı, Istanbul, the historic center of Turkey's music industry. The company built its reputation on two complementary pillars: releasing Turkish-language pop and production music, and importing and distributing foreign music into the Turkish market under its own label and through the Pop Müzik Dağıtım imprint. Topkapı Müzik is particularly associated with the early and most-listened albums of prominent Turkish artists such as Candan Erçetin, Yaşar, Ege, Sinem, Meriç, Emre Altuğ and Demet Sağıroğlu. From 1993 onward the label expanded its commitment to Turkish-language music production, becoming an active producer of domestic recordings rather than only a distributor. On the international side, Topkapı Müzik has acted as the Turkish representative, licensee and distributor for a range of foreign labels and brands. In earlier periods it handled names such as Virgin, A&M, Chrysalis and Polydor, and during the 2000s it served as the Turkish representative, licensee and distributor for Universal Music Group. It also imported albums into Turkey from companies including BlackHole Recordings and Armada Music (Netherlands), Pirahna Musik and earMUSIC (Germany), and New State Music, World Circuit Records, Fierce Angel and MOSHK Group (United Kingdom). The label remains a private Turkish company operating from Istanbul, with its official web presence at topkapitr.com.
History
Topkapı Müzik was founded in 1987 and established itself in Unkapanı, Istanbul, the district long regarded as the hub of Turkey's recorded-music business. In its early years the company focused on importing foreign music CDs from the United States and various European Union countries and releasing them in Turkey under its own label and under the Pop Müzik Dağıtım label. From 1993 the company began to invest directly in Turkish-language music production, signing and producing domestic artists. Over the following years Topkapı Müzik released the first and most-listened albums of a number of prominent Turkish performers, including Candan Erçetin, Yaşar, Ege, Sinem, Meriç, Emre Altuğ and Demet Sağıroğlu. These releases helped define the label's identity as a launchpad for Turkish pop talent. Alongside its domestic output, Topkapı Müzik built a substantial licensing and distribution business. In earlier periods it represented and distributed international brands such as Virgin, A&M, Chrysalis and Polydor in Turkey. During the 2000s it served as the Turkish representative, licensee and distributor for Universal Music Group. It also imported albums into Turkey from a range of independent and specialist labels, including BlackHole Recordings and Armada Music from the Netherlands, Pirahna Musik and earMUSIC from Germany, and New State Music, World Circuit Records, Fierce Angel and MOSHK Group from the United Kingdom. By combining domestic production with international licensing and import, Topkapı Müzik maintained a dual role in the Turkish market: developing local artists while giving Turkish listeners access to foreign repertoire. The company continues to operate as a private label based in Istanbul.
