Overview

Top Records is an Italian record label founded in 1976 in Milan by producer Guido Palma. It is one of the country's historic independent labels and is a member of the IFPI (International Federation of the Phonographic Industry). The company operates from Galleria del Corso 4 in Milan, an address known locally as the "Palazzo della Musica" (Palace of Music), where it also runs a demo submission programme for new artists. In its early years the label signed artists such as The Bronis, Layla Arizona, Demis Roussos, Nokeys and Henry Mancini. In 1980 Palma founded the music publishing arm Dingo Music, which built a large catalogue of pop, rock, light music and orchestral dance repertoire, originally issued on vinyl. Over the decades Top Records and Dingo Music have worked with well-known Italian songwriters including Peppino Principe, Luigi Albertelli, Paola Palma and Massimo Luca. The label's history includes a 1984 "Special Collection" tied to that year's Premio Rino Gaetano, a 1987 collaboration on the Jimi Hendrix compilation "The Jimi Hendrix Concerts", and a landmark 1998 Sanremo Festival victory: the song "Senza te o con te", written by Massimo Luca and Paola Palma and performed by Annalisa Minetti, won first prize with Top Records and Dingo Music working in collaboration with Sony Music. In 2013, during the Sanremo Festival, Guido Palma received the AFI career award. Distribution of Top Records releases has passed through several major partners over the years, including WEA, EMI, RTI Music (Mediaset Group), Sony Music S4 and C.G.D. East West / Warner Music. The group also includes the labels Dingo Music, Sap, Kiwi Record and Smoking Productions. Top Records remains active, releasing new material such as the 2026 single "Mi vuoi bene o no" by the duo RaestaVinvE, and continues to accept demo submissions through its official website.

History

Top Records was founded in 1976 in Milan by record producer Guido Palma. It quickly established itself as an independent Italian label, signing artists in the 1970s such as The Bronis, Layla Arizona, Demis Roussos, Nokeys and Henry Mancini. In 1980 Palma founded the music publishing company Dingo Music, which assembled a very large repertoire of pop, rock, light music and orchestral dance music, publishing works on vinyl. Notable Italian songwriters who wrote for Top Records and Dingo Music include Peppino Principe, Luigi Albertelli, Paola Palma and Massimo Luca, the latter known for his work with Gianluca Grignani, Lighea and Paola e Chiara. In 1984 the label issued a "Special Collection" dedicated to that year's edition of the Premio Rino Gaetano. In 1987 Top Records collaborated on the publication of a Jimi Hendrix compilation titled "The Jimi Hendrix Concerts". A major milestone came in 1998 when Top Records and Dingo Music, in collaboration with Sony Music, won first prize at the Sanremo Festival with the song "Senza te o con te", written by Massimo Luca and Paola Palma and performed by Annalisa Minetti. In 2013, again during the Sanremo Festival, Guido Palma was awarded the AFI career prize. Over the years Top Records has been distributed by WEA, EMI, RTI Music (Mediaset Group), Sony Music S4 (an exclusive imprint of Sony Music Entertainment) and C.G.D. East West / Warner Music. The Top Records group also includes the labels Dingo Music, Sap, Kiwi Record and Smoking Productions. The label remains active: in 2026 it released the single "Mi vuoi bene o no" by the duo RaestaVinvE. Top Records is a member of the IFPI and operates from Galleria del Corso 4 in Milan, known as the "Palazzo della Musica", where it accepts demo submissions from new artists.
