Overview
Top Latino TV is a Peruvian music and entertainment brand that grew out of a weekly Latin music chart. It began in May 2004 as a ranking of the 40 most-listened songs across Spanish-speaking countries, published online and syndicated to radio stations across Latin America in a two-hour weekly program hosted by Patricia Lúcar, the brand's main public figure. The chart was also covered by outlets such as Rolling Stone. The brand expanded into television when Top Latino was broadcast on Panamericana Televisión from August 2009, and later launched its own cable channel, Top Latino TV, on 15 March 2016 via the Hispasat satellite and more than 125 cable operators in Peru, reaching several Latin American countries. The channel focuses on music and youth-oriented entertainment, including interviews with Peruvian and international artists, and is distributed through cable, free-to-air and streaming, including Movistar TV in Peru. Alongside television, Top Latino operates Top Latino Radio, an online radio station streaming 24 hours of music in English and Spanish based on the weekly chart, and a podcast network distributed via Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Amazon Music and iHeartRadio. The brand maintains a social media presence as @toplatinotv on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and YouTube. Its website, toplatino.net, publishes music news, interviews and chart content. Top Latino TV has been available on Peruvian digital terrestrial television in Lima since 2018, migrating frequencies over time, and expanded to Juliaca in 2025. It remains a privately held Peruvian media brand with national cable coverage and a Latin American audience.
History
Top Latino was launched on 22 May 2004 as a music chart compiling the 40 most-listened songs in 22 Spanish-speaking countries. The list was published on the official Top Latino website and was even covered by Rolling Stone and other print media. In parallel, the chart was broadcast through a chain of syndicated radio stations in Latin America in a two-hour weekly program hosted by Patricia Lúcar, the brand's main figure. In the same year, it began internet radio broadcasts as Top Latino Radio. After its radio phase, Top Latino premiered on Panamericana Televisión on 23 August 2009. In an interview with El Comercio, Lúcar said the choice of that channel was due to the restructuring process it was undergoing at the time, which made it more open to projects like hers. In September 2009, Top Latino was included as a sponsor of the Paz Sin Fronteras concert held in Havana, Cuba, with 15 Latin American artists including Olga Tañón, Víctor Manuel and Miguel Bosé. It also sponsored international awards such as the Billboard Awards in 2010, where Patricia Lúcar was the only Peruvian journalist present on the red carpet, and the Viña del Mar International Song Festival. However, in July 2010, Panamericana TV removed Top Latino from its programming. Top Latino TV was launched as a cable television channel on 15 March 2016 via the Hispasat satellite and through more than 125 cable operators across Peru, also reaching several Latin American countries such as Colombia, Ecuador, Bolivia, Argentina, Nicaragua and Guatemala via cable. On 13 September 2018, Top Latino TV entered Lima's digital terrestrial television on subchannel 11.2 in HD, within the multiplex of Red Bicolor de Comunicaciones. On 18 November 2021 it migrated its frequency to the Grupo RPP multiplex on channel 3.2 HD of the DTT. On 1 July 2019, Top Latino TV launched the program Mamá estoy en la Tele, the first reality competition to find television presenters. The program was hosted by Patricia Lúcar and the season ended on 30 August 2019. On 22 October 2024, it stopped broadcasting on the Grupo RPP multiplex on channel 3.2 HD in Lima to make way for the SD signal of RPP TV, while maintaining national coverage through various cable operators, free-to-air and internet. On 15 January 2025 it entered DTT in Juliaca, Puno Region, on channel 3.3 HD. On 1 March 2025, Top Latino joined Movistar TV on channels 605 SD and 800 HD.
