Overview
Tomorrow.io is an American weather technology company headquartered in Boston that develops weather intelligence and climate-adaptation tools for businesses, governments, and other institutions. Legally known as The Tomorrow Companies Inc., it was founded in 2016 as ClimaCell by Shimon Elkabetz, Itai Zlotnik, and Rei Goffer. The company initially pursued a differentiated approach to forecasting by using wireless communications infrastructure, cellular-network signals, Internet of Things devices, and other nontraditional observations to supplement conventional weather stations, radar, and satellites. This approach was intended to provide more localized and frequently updated information, particularly in areas where conventional observation networks are sparse. ClimaCell expanded from data collection into consumer and enterprise forecasting. In 2019 it introduced a mobile weather application offering minute-by-minute, street-level forecasts. The app was later renamed Weather by Tomorrow after the corporate rebrand. In March 2021, ClimaCell adopted the Tomorrow.io name and announced a $77 million Series D financing round. The company said the capital would support expansion of its software-as-a-service business and development of its own satellite programme, known as Operation Tomorrow Space. Tomorrow.io's principal commercial offering is a weather intelligence platform delivered through a web interface, application programming interfaces, historical datasets, predictive forecasts, and automated alerts. Its customers and use cases span aviation, logistics, mobility, energy, agriculture, insurance, sports, retail, and public-sector operations. The platform is designed to help organizations anticipate weather-related disruption, optimize routes and schedules, manage operational risk, and plan for climate variability. Reported customers and users have included airlines such as JetBlue Airways and Delta Air Lines, companies including Uber and Ford Motor Company, sports organizations such as Fox Sports and the New England Patriots, NASA, the United States Department of Defense, the United States Air Force, and municipal governments including Hoboken, New Jersey. The company has also worked with governments in Nigeria and the Philippines on weather information intended to support agricultural planning. A major part of Tomorrow.io's strategy is the deployment of proprietary space-based sensors. Its first radar satellite, Tomorrow-R1, launched in April 2023, followed by Tomorrow-R2 in June 2023. The microsatellites carry Ka-band software-defined precipitation radars and were described as the first commercially built weather-radar satellites. In August 2024, the company added Tomorrow-S1 and Tomorrow-S2, CubeSats using passive microwave sounder radiometers. By February 2026, Tomorrow.io stated that its first-generation constellation had reached 13 low-Earth-orbit satellites and a global revisit rate of approximately 60 minutes. The company has received United States defense-related contracts for space-based weather sensing, including a May 2024 APFIT award to manufacture and deliver two microwave sounder satellites for the United States Air Force Weather Systems Branch. In March 2025, it announced a technical collaboration with NVIDIA involving the Earth-2 platform, contributing near-real-time proprietary satellite observations to AI-based weather and climate modelling. In February 2026, Tomorrow.io announced a $175 million financing round at a valuation above $1 billion and introduced DeepSky, a planned AI-native satellite constellation intended to increase sensing frequency, coverage, and atmospheric intelligence. The company has remained privately held after terminating a proposed SPAC transaction in 2022.
History
Tomorrow.io began in 2016 as ClimaCell, founded by Shimon Elkabetz, Itai Zlotnik, and Rei Goffer. Its early technical premise was that weather models could be improved by collecting observations from sources not traditionally used as primary meteorological infrastructure. Cellular-network signals, wireless communications systems, Internet of Things devices, and other connected infrastructure could reveal localized atmospheric conditions at higher spatial and temporal resolution than many conventional observation networks. This approach shaped the company's initial product development and helped distinguish it from weather businesses focused mainly on public meteorological datasets. In 2019, ClimaCell extended its technology to consumers with a mobile application offering highly localized, minute-by-minute forecasts. The application was later renamed Weather by Tomorrow. The business subsequently emphasized enterprise and government applications, where weather information could directly support operational decisions in aviation, logistics, mobility, energy, insurance, agriculture, sports, and public administration. The company changed its name to Tomorrow.io in March 2021. At the same time, it announced a $77 million Series D financing round led by Stonecourt Capital and Highline Capital, reporting total funding of approximately $184 million. The rebrand accompanied Operation Tomorrow Space, an initiative to deploy proprietary weather satellites and reduce dependence on third-party observations. The planned space system was intended to give the company direct access to precipitation and atmospheric measurements that could be incorporated into its forecasting platform. In December 2021, Tomorrow.io announced a proposed merger with Pine Technology Acquisition Corp., a special-purpose acquisition company. The transaction was presented at an estimated post-merger valuation of about $1.2 billion and was expected to provide as much as $420 million in gross proceeds. The agreement did not close. In March 2022, the parties mutually terminated it, attributing the decision to market conditions. Tomorrow.io paid Pine Technology $1.5 million under the termination terms and continued operating as a private company. The satellite programme progressed in 2023. Tomorrow-R1 launched on April 15 aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 during the Transporter-7 rideshare mission, and Tomorrow-R2 followed on June 12 during Transporter-8. Both were microsatellites carrying Ka-band software-defined radar payloads designed to observe precipitation and ocean-surface characteristics. Their deployment was presented as a significant step for commercial weather observation because the satellites were among the first commercially developed spacecraft built around weather-radar sensing. In June 2023, the company also raised $87 million in Series E financing led by Activate Capital, with participation from RTX Ventures, Seraphim Space, Chemonics, and existing investors. The stated objective was to support a constellation of more than 20 satellites. Tomorrow.io broadened its sensing architecture in August 2024 with the launch of Tomorrow-S1 and Tomorrow-S2, two 6U CubeSats equipped with passive microwave sounder radiometers. The company also deepened its government work. It reported approximately $20 million in United States Department of Defense contracts related to space-based weather sensors and received an APFIT award in May 2024 to manufacture and deliver two microwave sounder satellites for the United States Air Force Weather Systems Branch. In 2025, Tomorrow.io announced a technical collaboration with NVIDIA centered on the Earth-2 platform. Tomorrow.io's role was to contribute proprietary, near-real-time satellite data to support digital-twin and AI weather-modelling work. The partnership reflected the company's broader strategy of combining direct observation, machine learning, and software delivery. By February 2026, Tomorrow.io stated that it had completed deployment of a first-generation constellation of 13 low-Earth-orbit satellites, capable of a global revisit rate of about 60 minutes. It announced a further $175 million equity financing round led by Stonecourt Capital and HarbourVest Partners at a valuation exceeding $1 billion, making the company a reported unicorn. The financing was intended to accelerate DeepSky, described as an AI-native, next-generation satellite constellation designed to increase coverage and sensing frequency. Tomorrow.io's business therefore spans weather data collection, atmospheric modelling, software, satellite manufacturing and operation, and decision-support services for commercial and public-sector customers.
