Overview

TOMONY (トモニー) is a chain of convenience stores located inside and around stations on the Seibu Railway network in the Tokyo metropolitan area. It is operated by Seibu Railway under a franchise agreement with FamilyMart, combining the railway operator's knowledge of station retail with FamilyMart's convenience store expertise. The name TOMONY expresses the idea of being 'together with' customers, the community, and nature, as well as the partnership between Seibu Railway and FamilyMart. The first trial stores opened on July 3, 2007, at Nerima, Nishi-Tokorozawa, and Nerima-Takanodai stations, testing three different store formats: walk-in (similar to a standard convenience store), step-in (smaller footprint), and counter-service (traditional kiosk style). After a three-month trial, the first permanent store opened at Takadanobaba Station in December 2007. The chain expanded steadily along Seibu lines, and as of March 25, 2025, there are 46 stores, including five automated vending machine stores. TOMONY stores offer typical convenience store products such as rice balls, sandwiches, beverages, and daily necessities, along with services like utility bill payment. Many stores are equipped with ATMs, FamiPort multimedia terminals, and accept various electronic payment methods including PASMO, Suica, and credit cards. The stores are not open 24 hours; most operate from 6:30 to 23:00, aligning with train schedules. TOMONY is an integral part of Seibu Railway's station retail strategy, alongside other station facilities like Emio.

History

TOMONY was established through a partnership between Seibu Railway and FamilyMart. On June 5, 2007, the two companies agreed to jointly operate a new type of station kiosk. The first trial stores opened on July 3, 2007, at three locations: Nerima Station (walk-in format), Nishi-Tokorozawa Station (step-in format), and Nerima-Takanodai Station (counter-service format). These three formats were tested over a three-month period to determine the best fit for different station environments. Following the trial, the first permanent TOMONY store opened on December 20, 2007, at Takadanobaba Station on the bridge concourse. Expansion continued in 2008 with stores at Musashi-Fujisawa Station (February 9), Kokubunji Station (April), Nakamurabashi Station (April), Fujimidai Station (May), Tanashi Station (May), Higashi-Kurume Station (July 14), Kiyose Station (July 29), and Higashimurayama Station (August 5). By the end of 2008, TOMONY had established a presence across multiple Seibu lines. The chain continued to grow in 2009 and 2010, adding stores at stations such as Tamagawa-Josui, Hoya, Hibarigaoka, Akitsu, Shin-Tokorozawa, Kotesashi, Higashi-Nagasaki, Hon-Kawagoe, Irumashi, and others. In 2011 and 2012, further stores opened, including at Ikebukuro Station (multiple locations), Tokorozawa Station, Seibu-Shinjuku Station, and Haijima Station. The network expanded to serve major commuter hubs and tourist destinations along the Seibu lines. In 2018, TOMONY began converting some traditional staffed stores to unmanned vending machine stores. On June 29, 2018, stores at Shiinamachi, Takanodai, Shimo-Igusa, Hagiyama, Iruma, and Igusa stations closed for conversion and reopened as automated vending machine stores from July 2018. This move aimed to reduce operating costs and maintain service at lower-traffic stations. Around the same time, TOMONY unified its staff evaluation system and name badges with those of FamilyMart. As of March 25, 2025, TOMONY operates 46 stores, including five vending machine stores. The chain remains an important part of Seibu Railway's non-railway business, providing convenience to passengers and contributing to the railway's overall service offering. TOMONY stores are managed by Seibu Railway's Along-the-Line Business Planning Department, with all staff being Seibu Railway employees or part-time workers, while supervisors are FamilyMart employees.
