Overview
Tokushu Kinzoku Excel Co., Ltd., commonly known as TOKKIN, is a Japanese precision metal materials manufacturer founded in 1940 and headquartered in Tokyo. The company produces high-quality, high-value-added materials according to customer specifications, processing metals into thin strips or sheets by cold rolling, cladding different materials into a single composite, and applying resin or solder to metal surfaces. Its materials are used in a wide range of applications, from everyday digital consumer products such as smart devices, PCs, automobiles, and gaming devices to industrial equipment including semiconductor manufacturing equipment, medical devices, and textile machinery. Although TOKKIN's materials are mostly invisible in the final product, they play an indispensable role in the proper functioning of products and their supporting components. TOKKIN's product portfolio includes stainless steels, nickel, cobalt, and titanium alloys, resistance alloys and electrical heating alloys, composite metals, high carbon steels, low carbon steels, and soft magnetic iron steels. The company offers custom-made materials with small lots and short lead times, and it prioritizes open dialogue with customers to meet distinct material property requirements. Its materials can be searched by applications, hardness and tensile strength, material properties, and categories, reflecting a deep specialization in precision metal materials. The company has manufacturing sites in Japan, Shanghai, and Taiwan, and in 2022 established a sales office in Singapore. As of January 1, 2024, it reported 7 domestic sites, 4 overseas affiliates, and 231 employees on a non-consolidated basis. Its capital is JPY 100 million, and sales for the 7th period (FY2023, non-consolidated) were JPY 6.4 billion. TOKKIN is committed to making customers' technology dreams come true and to helping customers become winners in their markets. TOKKIN's history dates back to 1919, when founder Chikashi Taniguchi joined Tokyo Kizai Kogyo Works and designed advanced rolling mills based on American-made models. In 1940, he established Tokushu Kinzoku Rolling Works in Itabashi, Tokyo, building a reputation for high-quality special steel materials for precision springs. The company was reorganized as Tokushu Kinzoku Kogyo Co., Ltd. in 1948 and again in 1952. It began producing cold-rolled stainless steel in 1956 and established production technology for 10-micron-thick cold-rolled materials in 1968. Over the decades, TOKKIN became a top supplier of stainless steel materials for headphones during the Sony Walkman era, developed materials for floppy disc metal hubs, and gained large market share in VTR cassette springs. In 1982, it started operation of the world's first 18-roll insertion type Z-High rolling mill at its Saitama Factory. In 1988, it began operations at Taiwan Tokkin Co., Ltd. Today, TOKKIN continues to develop high-performance materials for a more convenient and prosperous future.
History
The history of Tokushu Kinzoku Excel Co., Ltd. (TOKKIN) begins with its founder, Chikashi Taniguchi. In 1919, Taniguchi joined Tokyo Kizai Kogyo Works, the predecessor of today's Takasago Tekko K.K. Taking a cue from American-made rolling mills, he designed and manufactured the most advanced rolling mills of the time based on his original ideas. In 1930, he participated in the foundation of Nippon Kinzoku Co., Ltd. (formerly Tokyo Shintetsu Works). In 1940, he established Tokushu Kinzoku Rolling Works in Itabashi (Maeno-cho, Itabashi-ward), which became the former head office. The company established the best reputation in Japan for high-quality special steel materials for precision springs. In 1948, the company was reorganized as Tokushu Kinzoku Kogyo Co., Ltd., and in 1952 it was reorganized again as Tokushu Kinzoku Kogyo Co., Ltd. In 1956, it started production of cold-rolled stainless steel. In 1968, it established production technology for 10-micron-thick cold-rolled materials. In 1970, it offered the expertise of cold rolling technology to Hankook Metal Industrial Co., Ltd. In 1980, with the launch of the Sony Walkman (1979), the company became the top supplier of stainless steel materials for headphones. It also achieved the highest level in fatigue resistance of stainless steels for springs used for automobile seat belts. In 1981, it started developing new materials for metal hubs used for 3.5-inch floppy discs. In 1982, it established the Saitama Factory (former Saitama Tokushu Kinzoku Kogyo) and started the operation of the world's first 18-roll insertion type Z-High rolling mill. In 1985, during the heyday of VTRs, it gained a large market share with its suppressing springs for VTR cassettes. In 1987, it developed "FS-1", a special material for metal hubs, together with the former Nippon Stainless Steel, and achieved the top share in the metal hub market. In 1988, it started operation in Taiwan Tokkin Co., Ltd. and became one of the world's top f... (the history page continues). Today, TOKKIN is a precision metal materials manufacturer with manufacturing sites in Japan, Shanghai, and Taiwan, and a sales office in Singapore established in 2022.
