Overview
Tokusen Kogyo Co., Ltd. (トクセン工業株式会社) is a Japanese manufacturer of special metal wire headquartered in Ono, Hyogo Prefecture. The company traces its origins to 1934, when the Kanai Special Steel Wire Manufacturing Works was established in Amagasaki and began domestic production of wire for the spinning industry. It was separated from Kanai Juyo Kogyo Co., Ltd. and incorporated as Tokusen Kogyo Co., Ltd. in 1973. Today it describes itself as a "specialist in special metal wire," processing wire down to an extreme practical fineness of about 9 micrometres and supplying customers across a wide range of industries. The company's product portfolio is organized around four business divisions: the Tire Wire Division, the Special Steel Wire Division, the Functional Materials Division, and the Life Science Division. Its core offerings include steel cord and bead wire for steel radial tires and aircraft tires, hose wire for high-pressure hoses, saw wire for semiconductor silicon wafers, piston ring wire and snap ring wire for engines and transmissions, spring wire, piano wire, needle wire for fishing hooks, textile machinery wire, probe pins and wire probe wire for printed circuit boards and semiconductor devices, dot pins for dot-impact printers, ultra-fine spring wire, polishing wire for optical fibre connectors, silver nanoparticles for semiconductor chips and electronic substrates, and a range of medical wires such as round wire, flat and profile wire, straight and straight tapered wire, torque rope, hollow coils and PTFE-coated wire used in catheters, guidewires, endoscopes and suturing needles. Tokusen Kogyo is part of the Kanai group. Its group companies include Tokusen Engineering Co., Ltd., Japan Fine Steel Co., Ltd., TOKUSEN HYTECH, Inc., Kanai Juyo Kogyo Co., Ltd. and Kanai Holdings. The company has also expanded internationally, with TOKUSEN U.S.A., Inc. established in 1989 and Kanai Tokusen Kogyo (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. established in 2003. Its representative director and president is Kosuke Kanai, and its representative director and chairman is Hiromi Kanai. Positioned as a behind-the-scenes supporter of manufacturing, Tokusen Kogyo emphasizes long-cultivated wire-processing technologies — drawing, heat treatment, surface treatment, stranding, plating, profile drawing, rolling, precision micro-processing, straightening and assembly — supported by analytical instruments such as FE-SEM, AES, XPS, XRD, ICP and GC. The company also publishes technical and sustainability content through its TOKUSEN JOURNAL and pursues sustainability management based on social issues and stakeholder input.
History
Tokusen Kogyo's history begins in 1934 (Showa 9), when the Kanai Special Steel Wire Manufacturing Works (金井特殊鋼線製造所) was founded in Amagasaki, Hyogo Prefecture, and began domestic production of wire for the spinning industry. This origin placed the enterprise at the centre of Japan's efforts to localize specialized wire products during the pre-war industrial period. In 1968 (Showa 43), the company established the Ono Plant and began producing steel cord for tires, marking its entry into the automotive tire materials business that would become one of its core pillars. In 1973 (Showa 48), the business was separated from Kanai Juyo Kogyo Co., Ltd. and incorporated as Tokusen Kogyo Co., Ltd., the corporate entity that continues today. International expansion followed. In 1989 (Heisei 1), TOKUSEN U.S.A., Inc. was established, giving the company a manufacturing and sales presence in the United States; this operation continued until 2025. In 1995 (Heisei 7), Tokusen Engineering Co., Ltd. was established. In 2001 (Heisei 13), the company acquired management rights to Japan Fine Steel Co., Ltd. In 2003 (Heisei 15), Kanai Tokusen Kogyo (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. was established, extending the group's footprint into China; this entity operated until 2024. In 2014 (Heisei 26), the company acquired management rights to TOKUSEN HYTECH, Inc. In 2018 (Heisei 30), it obtained ISO 13485 certification, the international standard for medical device quality management systems, supporting its expansion into medical wire products. Over more than 80 years since its founding, Tokusen Kogyo has cultivated wire-processing technologies and leveraged its position as a materials manufacturer to serve customers in tires and engine parts as well as in medical, semiconductor, home appliance and solar power generation fields. As of the end of March 2026, the company reported 715 employees (including officers) and sales of 25.2 billion yen, with capital of 100 million yen. Its headquarters and technical centre are located at 1081 Minamiyama, Sumiyoshi-cho, Ono, Hyogo. The company is part of the Kanai group, whose related companies include Tokusen Engineering, Japan Fine Steel, TOKUSEN HYTECH, Kanai Juyo Kogyo and Kanai Holdings.
