Overview
Tohoku Denki Tekko Co., Ltd. (電機鉄工株式会社) is a Japanese engineering, manufacturing and construction company headquartered at 1-4-57 Ohama, Sakata, Yamagata. It was established in November 1945 as Kabushiki Kaisha Tohoku Denki Seisakusho, with its head office and factory in Sakata and sales offices in Yamagata and Shinjo. Its original business was the repair of electric motors and transformers and the construction of power stations, substations, transmission lines, distribution lines and general electric light, power and heating works. In February 1950 the company absorbed Tohoku Kikai Seisakusho, an affiliate of Tekkosha Co., Ltd., and changed its name to Tohoku Denki Tekko Co., Ltd., adding the manufacture and repair of chemical, mining, marine, machinery, boiler, plate-working and casting products to its scope. Over the following decades it broadened into steel-frame buildings, steel towers, bridges and piping works, obtained construction registration, and in 1954 opened a first-class architect office. In 1958 it signed a special agency agreement with Hitachi, Ltd. to sell industrial electrical equipment and chemical products, and in 1959 began manufacturing propane and acetylene gas containers. The company expanded its manufacturing base through the 1960s and 1970s, rebuilding and enlarging its machinery, plate-working and casting plants, and converting its former container plant into a steel-frame plant. In 1979 it was designated by Nippon Steel Corporation as a certified steel bridge fabrication plant and entered the steel bridge sector in earnest; in the same year it founded the wholly owned subsidiary Tohoku Maintenance Kogyo Co., Ltd. and merged with Tekkosha Engineering Co., Ltd. and Towa Tekkiko Co., Ltd. to enlarge its operating scale. Capital was doubled to 200 million yen in 1982. Today the company describes itself as offering one-stop services from design and construction to after-maintenance, covering the design and construction of advanced plants, electrical facilities, water supply and drainage, air-conditioning works, and instrumentation works including automatic control and monitoring systems and data-processing systems for various plants and production facilities. Its product and project portfolio includes steel bridges, water gates, pressure vessels and containers, electrical and instrumentation works, and more recently solar-powered white LED street lights and a TCI Coanda injector for bag filters, for which it obtained a patent in 2014. It operates through a head office in Sakata and branches and offices including Yamagata, Tsuruoka, Yonezawa, Tokyo and Toyama, and established the wholly owned subsidiary Denki Tekko Yamagata Co., Ltd. in 2015. The company marked its 70th anniversary in November 2015 and completed a new head office building in December 2017. It holds ISO 9001 certification for the design and fabrication of bridges, water gates, containers, electrical and instrumentation works, most recently re-certified in November 2023.
