Overview

Tohcello Co., Ltd. (アールエム東セロ株式会社, Rm Tohcello) is a Japanese manufacturer of packaging films and sheets, headquartered in Chiyoda City, Tokyo. It was launched on 1 April 2024 through the business integration of the packaging solutions business of Mitsui Chemicals Tohcello Co., Ltd. and Sun-Tox Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of Rengo Co., Ltd. The new company combines the knowledge and technology of both predecessors and positions itself as a leading company in packaging films and sheets, describing itself on its website as a top-share brand in that field. The company's product range covers biaxially oriented polypropylene (OPP) film, cast polypropylene (CPP) film, transparent high-barrier films, PVDC-coated barrier films, aluminum and transparent vapor-deposited films, PVA-coated OPP film, co-extruded multilayer films, easy-open films, L-LDPE films, low-foaming PE and PP/PE sheets, and packing materials. Several products are marketed under registered or trademarked names, including Econage, V Barrier, Max Barrier, Ult Barrier, A-OP, T.A.F., CMPS, T.U.X, El Smart, High Sheet, Palonia, and Spush. Applications span flexible packaging for food and other consumer goods, with barrier, retort, easy-open, freshness-preservation, and eco-friendly functions. Tohcello operates a substantial domestic and international network. According to its company information, it has 1,241 employees (as of 1 April 2026), 10 sales bases, one overseas base, seven domestic factories, three affiliated companies, one overseas factory, and two research laboratories. Its heritage includes the OPP film business started by Tokuyama Soda (now Tokuyama Corporation) at its Tokuyama plant in 1975, the 1992 establishment of Sun-Tox as a film sales joint venture between Tokuyama Soda and Okura Industrial, and the 2010 creation of Mitsui Chemicals Tohcello through the integration of Tohcello and Mitsui Chemicals Fabro. The 2024 integration brought these strands together under the Rm Tohcello name. The company is a joint venture involving Rengo and Mitsui Chemicals, and it continues to invest in sustainability-oriented products, including high-purity recycled PP film for flexible packaging announced in 2026. Its business is focused on business-to-business supply of functional packaging materials rather than consumer-facing branded goods.

History

Tohcello Co., Ltd. (Rm Tohcello) was established on 1 April 2024 by integrating the packaging solutions business of Mitsui Chemicals Tohcello Co., Ltd. with Sun-Tox Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of Rengo Co., Ltd. The company describes itself as a new yet historic leading company in packaging films, reflecting the long histories of its predecessor businesses. One lineage traces to 1975, when Tokuyama Soda Co., Ltd. (now Tokuyama Corporation) commercialized OPP film at its Tokuyama plant, starting operation of the No. 1 OPP line and expanding to a No. 4 line by 1989. In 1992, Tokuyama Soda and Okura Industrial Co., Ltd. jointly established Sun-Tox Co., Ltd. as a film sales company. Sun-Tox subsequently expanded its manufacturing: a multilayer extrusion film business was commercialized and the No. 1 CPP line began operation at the Kanto plant in 1994; the No. 5 OPP line and No. 2 CPP line started at the Kanto plant in 1997; domestic manufacturing and sales were integrated into Sun-Tox in 2000; the Kanto plant's No. 3 CPP line began operation in 2008; and the No. 6 OPP line started at the Kanto plant in 2017. Ownership also shifted: Sun-Tox became a wholly owned subsidiary of Tokuyama Corporation in 2003, received capital participation from Rengo in 2015, and became a consolidated subsidiary of Rengo in 2020 following a change in shareholding ratios between Rengo and Tokuyama. The other lineage concerns Tohcello and Mitsui Chemicals. Tohcello Chemical Co., Ltd. and Shin-Tohcello Shoji Co., Ltd. were integrated in 1993 to form Tohcello Co., Ltd. In 2005, Tohcello increased its capital through a public offering, and Mitsui Chemicals Fabro Co., Ltd. was formed by integrating High Sheet Industry Co., Ltd. and Mitsui Chemicals Platech Co., Ltd. In 2008, Tohcello absorbed its wholly owned subsidiary Tohcello Pax Co., Ltd. In 2009, Tohcello conducted a share exchange with Mitsui Chemicals, Inc. and became a wholly owned subsidiary. In October 2010, Tohcello and Mitsui Chemicals Fabro integrated all businesses except Mitsui Chemicals Fabro's living materials business, relaunching as Mitsui Chemicals Tohcello Co., Ltd. In April 2012, the film and sheet business was positioned as a business unit-level organization of Mitsui Chemicals, and new product market development functions were transferred to Mitsui Chemicals Tohcello; in the same month, Mitsui Chemicals Tohcello established Siam Tohcello Co., Ltd. in Thailand as a joint venture with SCG Chemicals for high-performance packaging LLDPE film (T.U.X). In April 2016, the Koga plant was integrated into the Ibaraki plant to strengthen the competitiveness of the packaging film business. The 2024 integration of Mitsui Chemicals Tohcello's packaging solutions business and Sun-Tox created Rm Tohcello, combining the two heritages. The company reports 1,241 employees as of 1 April 2026, with 10 sales bases, one overseas base, seven domestic factories, three affiliated companies, one overseas factory, and two research laboratories. It continues to develop products such as high-purity recycled PP film for flexible packaging, announced in July 2026.
