Overview

Tjaereborg was a German travel operator brand that originated from a Danish initiative. In 1950, in the Danish town of Tjæreborg, a group of parishioners organized a trip to Spain under the leadership of their pastor, Eilif Krogager. After the trip ended in financial failure, Krogager recognized a market gap and professionalized the travel organization, eventually founding Tjaereborg, which became the largest travel operator in Scandinavia by the 1970s. The German subsidiary, Tjaereborg Reisen GmbH Deutschland, was registered on 20 December 1973 as a wholly owned subsidiary of the Danish parent. The first German Tjaereborg travel agency opened in Düsseldorf in 1974, followed by offices in Hamburg, Hannover, and Berlin. Within three years, Tjaereborg became the fourth-largest travel operator in West Germany. In 1981, the company was acquired by allkauf Warenhaus GmbH, and later saw partial ownership by Jahn Reisen and the LTU Group. On 1 January 2001, Tjaereborg became part of the Rewe Group, which acquired all tour operator brands of LTU Touristik. Management moved to Cologne. Between 2006 and 2013, Rewe's package tour operators operated under the name Rewe Touristik Gesellschaft mbH, with Tjaereborg as a brand. From 2013, they were consolidated under DER Touristik Group. In July 2014, Tjaereborg's offering was replaced by the new brand Travelix, and most of its catalog was taken over by the brand ITS on 1 November 2014. Tjaereborg Deutschland was renamed Travelix on 1 July 2014. In Denmark, Tjaereborg was acquired by Spies in 2009, which belonged to the Thomas Cook Group. The brand is now defunct.

History

Tjaereborg's history began in 1950 in the Danish town of Tjæreborg, where a group of parishioners organized a trip to Spain. Their pastor, Eilif Krogager, took over the organization. Finding all offers too expensive, he chartered two buses himself and acted as tour guide, interpreter, and organizer. The trip ended in a financial fiasco, but Krogager recognized a market gap: he decided to professionalize travel organization to bring his countrymen to sunny southern destinations more cheaply than other operators. He bought several buses, later chartered planes, and founded Sterling Airways. Hotel offerings were limited to popular high-capacity properties. Tours were sold through specially founded Tjaereborg travel agencies. By the 1970s, Tjaereborg was the largest travel operator in Scandinavia, and Sterling Airlines was one of Europe's leading charter airlines. Tjaereborg's size allowed it to conquer the travel market with low prices. On 20 December 1973, Tjaereborg Reisen GmbH Deutschland was registered as a wholly owned subsidiary of Tjæreborg Denmark. The first German Tjaereborg travel agency opened in 1974 in Düsseldorf, followed by offices in Hamburg, Hannover, and Berlin. After three years, Tjaereborg was the fourth-largest travel operator in West Germany. In 1981, allkauf Warenhaus GmbH, based in Mönchengladbach, acquired Tjaereborg. On 1 January 1987, Jahn Reisen acquired 49.9% of Tjaereborg allkauf Reisen, increasing its stake to 52.6% on 15 December 1989. In 1990, the former LTU Group entered through Jahn Reisen. The headquarters of Tjaereborg allkauf Reisen GmbH remained in Mönchengladbach until the end of 1996, then moved to Düsseldorf. On 1 January 2000, LTU Touristik GmbH took over Tjaereborg 100%. After 1 January 2001, Tjaereborg belonged to the Rewe Group, which acquired all tour operator brands of LTU Touristik (Jahn Reisen, Tjaereborg, smile & fly, Meier's Weltreisen). Tjaereborg's management then moved to Cologne. Between 2006 and 2013, Rewe's package tour operators operated under Rewe Touristik Gesellschaft mbH, with Tjaereborg as a brand. Since 2013, they have operated under DER Touristik Group. In July 2014, Tjaereborg Indi was replaced by the new brand Travelix, and most of Tjaereborg's catalog was taken over by ITS on 1 November 2014. Tjaereborg Deutschland was renamed Travelix on 1 July 2014. In Denmark, Tjaereborg was acquired by Spies in 2009, which belonged to the Thomas Cook Group.
