Overview

TITAL GmbH is a German manufacturer of sophisticated investment castings made from titanium and aluminum alloys. The company is headquartered in Bestwig in the Sauerland region of Germany and specializes in the wax-investment casting process to produce complex, high-integrity components. Its products are supplied to customers in the aerospace, defense, motorsport and mechanical engineering sectors. TITAL was founded in 1974 by W.C. Heraeus and Honsel, and for decades it operated as a majority-owned subsidiary of the Honsel AG group. In 2006, the management team acquired the company with the backing of a private equity arm of DZ Bank. The company gained prominence in the aerospace supply chain, notably achieving first-article audit approval as a supplier for the new Airbus A350 in January 2010 in just three days. In late 2014, TITAL was acquired by the US aluminum producer Alcoa. When Alcoa split in 2016, TITAL became part of Arconic, and following Arconic's own separation in 2020, TITAL has been part of Howmet Aerospace since April 1, 2020. Today, TITAL operates as a key part of Howmet's Engine Products division, which is a world-class producer of aero engine and industrial gas turbine components. The company has faced challenges, including workforce reductions during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2021, but has since expanded production capacities in Hungary and Serbia. TITAL's expertise in titanium and aluminum investment casting supports the next generation of quieter, cleaner and more fuel-efficient aero engines and power generation.

History

TITAL was founded in 1974 by W.C. Heraeus and Honsel as a specialist in precision investment casting. The company established its headquarters in Bestwig, in the Sauerland region of Germany, and focused on producing complex components from titanium and aluminum alloys using the wax-investment casting process. For many years, TITAL operated as a majority-owned subsidiary of Honsel AG, a German automotive and industrial supplier. In 2006, the management team, supported by a private equity company of DZ Bank in Frankfurt, acquired the company from Honsel. This management buyout marked a new phase of independence. In 2008, TITAL received €850,000 in funding from the German Federal Ministry for the Environment's innovation program to develop a new casting method for producing large components in a single piece. In January 2010, the company achieved first-article audit approval as a supplier for the new Airbus A350 in just three days, a significant milestone in its aerospace credentials. In late 2014, TITAL was acquired by the US aluminum producer Alcoa. When Alcoa split into two companies in 2016, TITAL became part of Arconic, the value-add engineering and manufacturing business. Following Arconic's own separation in 2020, TITAL became part of Howmet Aerospace on April 1, 2020. Howmet Aerospace is a leading global provider of advanced engineered solutions for the aerospace and transportation industries, and TITAL now operates within its Engine Products segment. The COVID-19 pandemic severely impacted the aerospace industry, and in 2021 TITAL had to let go of 210 employees. In response to market conditions and to optimize its cost base, the company has since been establishing production capacities in Hungary and Serbia. Today, TITAL continues to supply titanium and aluminum investment castings to customers in aerospace, defense, motorsport and mechanical engineering, leveraging Howmet's global resources and technical expertise.
