Overview
Titagarh Firema S.p.A., commonly known simply as Firema, is an Italian company active in the design, construction and maintenance of railway vehicles. It was established in 2015 when the Indian firm Titagarh Wagons and the Naples-based Adler Plastic acquired the business complex of Firema Trasporti, forming Titagarh Firema Adler. In 2018, after Adler sold a 10% stake, the company changed its name to Titagarh Firema. The company produces rolling stock for metros and railways, serving both passenger and freight transport. Notable projects include the CT0 electric train for the Catania metro, a framework agreement with the Lazio region for 38 vehicles for the Roma-Lido and Roma-Civita Castellana-Viterbo lines, and the "Vinci" InterCity train presented at InnoTrans 2022. In September 2022, Invitalia acquired a 30.3% stake and the Emirati company Hawk Eye acquired 13.6%. After negotiations that began in July 2025, on 14 December 2025 the board of Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane approved the acquisition of the company, and the purchase was completed on 4 March 2026 through the subsidiary FS Fabbrica Italiana Treni s.p.a. The company is now part of the Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane group.
History
The company originated from the Fi.Re.Ma. consortium, formed in 1980 by Casaralta, Officine Fiore, Officine Meccaniche della Stanga, Officine di Cittadella, Officine Meccaniche Casertane and Firema Engineering. In subsequent years other companies joined, leading to the founding in 1993 of Firema Trasporti S.p.A., 49% owned by Ansaldo (later Finmeccanica). Given the presence of IRI through Finmeccanica, there were collaborations with Breda Costruzioni Ferroviarie and Ansaldo Trasporti, which merged in 2001 into AnsaldoBreda. After Finmeccanica's exit in 2005, Firema's shareholder structure changed considerably following the closure of the Casaralta workshops in Bologna and those in Cittadella and Padova, leaving the Fiore family as majority shareholders. On 2 August 2010 the Ministry of Economic Development decreed the company's admission to extraordinary administration, appointing Ernesto Stajano as sole extraordinary commissioner. On 9 July 2015 the company's activities were purchased by two separate companies: the Indian Titagarh Wagons and the Neapolitan Adler Plastic, which formed Titagarh Firema Adler. In 2018, with Adler's sale of a 10% stake, the company changed its name to Titagarh Firema. On 15 September 2022 Invitalia acquired a 30.3% stake in the company while the Emirati company Hawk Eye acquired 13.6%. After negotiations that began in July 2025, on 14 December 2025 the board of directors of Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane approved the acquisition of the company, with the aim of making it a branch of the group. On 4 March 2026 the purchase of the company was completed through the subsidiary FS Fabbrica Italiana Treni s.p.a. of the Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane group.
