Overview

Tirurangadi Municipality is an urban local government body (municipality) in the Tirurangadi taluk of Malappuram district, Kerala, India. Its administrative headquarters is the town of Chemmad, which also serves as the taluk headquarters. The municipality was formed by upgrading the former Tirurangadi Grama Panchayat, a decision taken by the Kerala state cabinet on 4 February 2015. The panchayat itself had been constituted on 1 June 1962 by combining the villages of Tirurangadi and Thirukulam, and it was later administered under the Kerala Municipalities Act framework. As a municipality, Tirurangadi delivers a range of civic services and certificates to residents. Through the state's K-Smart platform, citizens can obtain birth, death and marriage certificates, building permits, civil registration services, property tax assessment and payment, trade licences, welfare pensions, and file public grievances. The municipality also maintains meeting minutes and project details online, and participates in national cleanliness programmes such as Swachh Survekshan. The town of Tirurangadi has deep historical significance in Kerala. Since 1836 the region was associated with the Mappila uprisings against British colonial policies and feudal landlords in Eranad and Valluvanad taluks. It was a major centre of the 1921 Malabar Rebellion. Landmarks within the municipal limits include the Mamburam Makham, the Nadvil Juma-ath Palli, and the Thirukulam Shiva Temple, believed to be nearly a thousand years old. The name Tirurangadi is thought to have evolved from the older name 'Thiruvanangadi'. Politically and administratively, the municipality is led by a Chairperson and a Vice Chairperson, with a Secretary as the senior civil servant. As of the official website, the Chairperson is C. P. Habeeba, the Vice Chairperson is Abdurahman Mannarattil, and the Secretary is M. V. Ramzi Ismail. The municipality is bounded by Munnior, A.R. Nagar and Vengara panchayats to the north, Vengara and Thennala panchayats to the east, Nannambra and Thennala panchayats to the south, and Nannambra panchayat and Parappanangadi Municipality to the west. It operates under the constitutional framework of the 74th Constitutional Amendment Act of 1992 and the Kerala Municipality Act of 1994.

History

Tirurangadi's history is deeply intertwined with the Malabar region's resistance to colonial rule. Since 1836, the area witnessed the Mappila uprisings against the unjust policies of the British and the feudal landlords who supported the colonial administration in Eranad and Valluvanad taluks. The region was a major centre of the 1921 Malabar Rebellion. Remnants of roads, forts, and places of worship from the periods of Tipu Sultan and the Zamorin testify to its ancient heritage. Historic landmarks such as the Mamburam Makham and the Nadvil Juma-ath Palli are well known, and the Thirukulam Shiva Temple, believed to be nearly a thousand years old, lies within the present municipal limits. The town's name is thought to have evolved from the older 'Thiruvanangadi'. In modern administrative history, the Tirurangadi Grama Panchayat Board was formed on 1 June 1962 by combining the villages of Tirurangadi and Thirukulam. From 1954 to 1958, members of the Panchayat Board were selected through a show-of-hands method. Kunjappan Nair was the first President of Thirukulam Panchayat, while K. T. Mohammed Haji served as the first President of the Tirurangadi Village Panchayat in 1954. After the terms of the Tirurangadi and Thirukulam Panchayats ended in 1958, a Special Officer took over the administration. On 20 December 1963, K. P. Ahmedkutty Haji was elected President of the Tirurangadi Panchayat, which included the Thirukulam and Tirurangadi villages. The Board that assumed office on 1 January 1964 continued in power for more than fifteen years. On 30 October 1995, the panchayat was reconstituted as Tirurangadi Grama Panchayat under the Kerala Panchayat Raj Act. The movement to upgrade the panchayat to a municipality culminated when the Kerala state cabinet, at its meeting on 4 February 2015, decided to elevate the Tirurangadi Grama Panchayat to a municipality. The new Tirurangadi Municipality thus came into being, with Chemmad as its headquarters. The municipality is bounded on the north by Munnior, A.R. Nagar and Vengara panchayats; on the east by Vengara and Thennala panchayats; on the south by Nannambra and Thennala panchayats; and on the west by Nannambra panchayat and Parappanangadi Municipality. It functions under the 74th Constitutional Amendment Act of 1992 and the Kerala Municipality Act of 1994, and delivers services through the K-Smart platform developed by the Information Kerala Mission.
