Overview

Tiempos Modernos (full title: Tiempos Modernos. Revista electrónica de Historia Moderna; abbreviated Tiempos Mod. Rev. Electrón. Hist. Mod.) is a Spanish-language electronic scientific journal dedicated to the study of the Early Modern period. Established in 2000, it publishes on a semiannual basis and covers the sixteenth, seventeenth and eighteenth centuries across a wide range of historical disciplines, including art history, literary history, the history of science, political history and socio-economic history. Its stated aim is to bring together the interests of diverse historical fields around the common objective of studying the development of human societies during the Early Modern era. The journal is an independent initiative. It does not depend economically or institutionally on any university, public body or company. Institutional coverage is provided by the non-profit association Mundos Modernos, which sustains the journal's activity through contributions from its benefactor members. This structure distinguishes Tiempos Modernos from many academic journals that are housed within universities or learned societies. Tiempos Modernos is indexed in major scientific databases, including Historical Abstracts, Dialnet, Scopus, ERIH, CIRC, ISOC, LATINDEX and Revues.org, and it has received the quality seal of FECyT (the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology). Its editorial direction has changed several times since its founding: José Ramón Pérez Agüera served as director from 2000 to 2005, followed by Josep Palau i Orta (2005–2008), Diego Téllez Alarcia (2008–2013) and Fernando Negredo del Cerro (2013–present). The journal maintains an official website at tiemposmodernos.org and is distributed in digital form.

History

Tiempos Modernos was established in 2000 as an electronic scientific journal devoted to Early Modern History. From its inception it was conceived as an independent initiative, not attached to any university, public organism or company. Institutional support was provided by the non-profit association Mundos Modernos, which maintains the journal through contributions from benefactor members. The journal has been published semiannually since its founding. Its scope covers the sixteenth, seventeenth and eighteenth centuries and deliberately brings together multiple historical disciplines — art history, literary history, the history of science, political history and socio-economic history — under the common goal of studying the development of human societies in the Early Modern period. Leadership of the journal has rotated among scholars. José Ramón Pérez Agüera directed it from 2000 to 2005. Josep Palau i Orta followed from 2005 to 2008, then Diego Téllez Alarcia from 2008 to 2013, and Fernando Negredo del Cerro from 2013 to the present. In 2010, Diego Téllez Alarcia published an article in Nuevo Mundo, Mundos Nuevos reviewing the past, present and future of the journal. Over the years Tiempos Modernos has been indexed in major scientific databases, including Historical Abstracts, Dialnet, Scopus, ERIH, CIRC, ISOC, LATINDEX and Revues.org, and it has received the quality seal of FECyT. It remains an active digital publication with its official website at tiemposmodernos.org.
