Overview
The Tiefrastenhütte is a mountain hut (Schutzhütte) of the Sektion Brixen of the Alpenverein Südtirol (AVS), situated at 2,312 metres above sea level in the Pfunderer Berge, a subgroup of the Zillertaler Alpen in South Tyrol, Italy. It stands beside the Tiefrastensee in the upper Winnebachtal, a northern side valley of the Pustertal, within the municipality of Terenten. The hut lies on the Pfunderer Höhenweg and serves as a base for hikes to surrounding peaks such as the Eidechsspitze, Hochgrubbachspitze and Kempspitze; to the east one can reach Mühlwald, and following the path northwest over the Hochsägescharte to the Passenjoch allows descent west to Pfunders or northeast to Lappach. The first hut at the Tiefrastensee was built in 1912 by the Sektion Brixen of the DuOeAV as the Fritz-Walde-Hütte, named after a Brixen merchant and section member who was particularly instrumental in its creation. It was first run during the summer months of 1913 and 1914, but the outbreak of the First World War ended its alpine use for the time being. After the war the Italian state expropriated the Alpenverein and handed the hut to the Club Alpino Italiano, which managed it until the Second World War. In 1944 it was first plundered and subsequently destroyed by fire. In 1975 the Sektion Brixen together with the Terenten and Vintl branches of the Alpenverein Südtirol began building a new hut on the same site. A renovation followed in 2004. Today the Tiefrastenhütte operates as a managed mountain refuge, offering shelter and refreshments to hikers and mountaineers in the Pfunderer Berge. It remains an important stop on the Pfunderer Höhenweg and a starting point for numerous tours in the region. The hut is owned and maintained by the AVS Sektion Brixen, continuing the tradition of alpine association hospitality that began over a century ago.
History
The history of the Tiefrastenhütte begins in 1912, when the Sektion Brixen of the DuOeAV (Deutscher und Österreichischer Alpenverein) built the first hut at the Tiefrastensee. It was named the Fritz-Walde-Hütte after a Brixen merchant and section member who had been particularly instrumental in its establishment. The hut was first operated during the summer months of 1913 and 1914, but the outbreak of the First World War put an end to its use for alpine purposes for the time being. After the war, the Italian state expropriated the Alpenverein and transferred the hut to the Club Alpino Italiano (CAI), which managed it until the Second World War. In 1944, the hut was first plundered and then destroyed by fire. In 1975, the Sektion Brixen, together with the Terenten and Vintl branches of the Alpenverein Südtirol (AVS), began constructing a new hut on the same site. A renovation took place in 2004. The hut continues to operate as a mountain refuge under the AVS Sektion Brixen.
