Overview
Tiede & edistys (Science & Progress) is a Finnish multidisciplinary and critical journal published by Tutkijaliitto, the Finnish Association for Researchers. Founded in 1976, the journal has served as a platform for critical theory, philosophy, and social thought in Finland for nearly five decades. It publishes articles, essays, and reviews that engage with a wide range of intellectual traditions, including continental philosophy, feminist theory, postcolonial studies, and political ecology. The journal is known for introducing Finnish readers to international thinkers such as Michel Foucault, Gilles Deleuze, Félix Guattari, and more recently Paul B. Preciado and Achille Mbembe. Its editorial board has included prominent Finnish scholars across disciplines. Tiede & edistys is not a commercial magazine in the traditional sense; it operates as part of the non-profit academic publishing activities of Tutkijaliitto, which also publishes books. The journal's content is primarily in Finnish, though it occasionally features translations. It remains an important venue for critical and theoretical debate in the Finnish academic landscape.
History
Tiede & edistys was founded in 1976 by Tutkijaliitto, the Finnish Association for Researchers. The journal emerged in a period of vibrant intellectual debate in Finland, when critical theory and Marxist thought were gaining traction in academia. From its inception, it aimed to provide a forum for multidisciplinary and critical approaches to science, culture, and society. The journal's first editor-in-chief was Seppo Toiviainen (1976–1978), followed by Antti Eskola (1979–1981), Sakari Hänninen (1981–1983), and Kaarlo Tuori (1984–1986). Under Yrjö Haila (1987–1993), the journal continued to expand its scope, engaging with environmental philosophy and political ecology. J. P. Roos took over in 1993 and served until 1996. Arto Noro then led the journal for a period. In the 2000s, Mika Ojakangas served as editor-in-chief from 2007 to 2013, followed by Miira Tuominen from 2013. Ari Hirvonen edited the journal from 2016 to 2019, and Tero Toivanen from 2020 to 2022. Since 2022, Ari Korhonen and Katariina Mäkinen have served as editors-in-chief. Throughout its history, the journal has published translations and original articles by Finnish and international scholars, contributing to the dissemination of critical theory in Finland. Its editorial board has included notable figures such as Yrjö Haila, Ilpo Helén, Merja Hintsa, Timo Kaitaro, Markku Koivusalo, Tuija Kokkonen, Turo-Kimmo Lehtonen, Susanna Lindberg, Mika Ojakangas, Tuija Pulkkinen, Kimmo Sarje, and Petri Ylikoski. The journal remains active and continues to publish several issues per year.
